Cheapest Uni student way to London

If you were to be asked the cheapest way for a uni student and boyfriend to get to London from Brisbane, which direction (ie airline, method) would you point? Points are available with VA, QF, SQ and point buy options are also open!

Hints very much appreciated.

Purchasing miles for an economy class award is unlikely to represent good value. Lifemiles would be one of the cheapest, but they come in at USD937 one way before taxes.

That is an incredible fare! ....29 years ago, when I was an Uni student, my parents paid $2199 to fly fly me Adl-Sin-Lhr rtn in Y on Sq!!

Check in with STA Travel, fares for students/under 31s can be available at less than the going (special) rates sometimes, often on "good" airlines.

I've been able to get it down to around $800 return for friends in the past using LCCs. (There was no checked baggage which helped reduce the costs.) They booked a return ticket with a low-cost carrier from Australia to Bangkok, then booked another return ticket from Bangkok to Germany with a different low-cost carrier. Stopover in Bangkok for 1-2 days in both directions.

Another time we found a cheap Air Asia X ticket to & back from Kuala Lumpur, then booked a cheap Lufthansa fare from KL to London for around $700 return during a sale. Came to around $1,000 all-up including baggage.

That said, even full-service airlines are now selling tickets around the $1,000 mark all the way from Australia to Europe... that's pretty hard to beat!

They have been well and truly repaid though....A few years ago I paid for them to go Syd- Lhr return in TG F; and currently they are in Europe having flown over on SQ F from Syd, and they are coming back on OZ J ...all on points....mine!

My uni student children have successfully used what they consider the cheapest method ... talk Dad into using his points/miles to book their flights. Various flights have been combinations of QF, EK and MH flights in combinations of economy and business class, using AA miles and/or QFF points.
