ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

some feedback on /pay: i've been unable to pay anything all day sunday and monday due to them exhausting their limit. Even test payments of $100 get declined. All in all the method is not exactly reliable.
Yes it's been hit and miss for weeks now. I have been trying to use it with issues. Their limit keeps getting maxed out so even a simple $20 purchase fails for me. I have spoken to them on multiple occasions and been told this will be the last time this will happen. Days later I see the same issue again.

At this stage they are not reliable enough to be used as a day to day payment platform

To again paraphrase my original source - /pay recently experienced a massive (relatively speaking, for them) surge in customers due to being featured on OzB, so any previous raised aggregate payment limit will need to be revised yet again.

And yes, I know the simple solution would be to just request an astronomically high ceiling, but one needs to keep in mind that liquidity costs real hard dollars. The balance between just-in-time supply management is finicky, and atm they're not nailing it; they are a startup, after all.

Down and out

From their website

/Pay is temporarily paused: Our virtual card partner is experiencing a temporary outage with their card issuing platform. Unfortunately this means that we need to put /pay on pause whilst they address these issues. We expect to be live again in the next 7 days. Please note you can refund any outstanding balances by clicking 'close and refund

Hmm, I have some funds in there. When closing card and refund, is it only back to the original source, even if it was funded via multiple Only1?

I didn’t use V1 for my latest load. Turnaround time for refund and for the system to be back up is almost the same. I’m going to wait it out.

Hopefully the $10k thing gets off the ground. Said wasn’t available to existing members when I asked. I’d be ok to pay $12 if it worked. Looks like
Some people must get up super early. Been trying to use it last few mornings 6am AEST and already maxed out by then.

It gets maxed out no matter what I did. paying at 12:15am, 12:02pm.. I gave up. I am gonna go to Target soon.

While I haven't used these new options yet myself as I'm still paying direct, I wonder how long all banks will keep paying full points on these intermediary services.

While there doesn't seem to be a logical reason why the banks should withdraw points earn given they are (presumably) still receiving their full cut, I can see the banks reclassifying such services as "cash-equivalent transactions" that do not pay points if the value of such transactions goes through the roof.

Anyway, the game rolls on... I wasn't here at the start in 2009, but I think have been playing since 2012.

Nothing like that has happened to us. I have returned home to a slew of tax returns to read and sign. Wow I have overpaid on a couple so tax refunds are looking good from the 40 odd quarterlies that I have paid over the year.

WW is running a promotion on their Eftpos gift cards with 2000 bonus points ($10) until Tues 1st May. Note bonus points only apply to the cards with a $6.95 fee. Buy with eGiftcards and pay the ATO at the PO using self serve. This was still working at my local PO but be mindful to do a tester.

3x points and $8 courtesy of WW per $100.

Hi Schmucky. Hadn’t thought of this method before. Is there a surcharge to pay using EFTPOS, like there is with debit Bisa/MC? Or does the whole $100 get used for payment alone?

no, but you have to avoid the dragons @ the posties who manned the counters and machines. If they suspect you using prepaid cards to pay bills, you are will be kicked out.

Thanks Woohoo. I did a trial run yesterday and paid 2 x $100 EFTPOS at Aus Post. No problems, no surcharge. Have bought 9 more, hopefully counter staff will be happy for future transactions - perhaps I’ll stick to afew at a time. Of interest, I got $2140 points for each card bought. Can’t exactly work out how.

I have been making ATO payments for years using the Qantas American Express card. You pay the CC fee, but it's money I had to pay in any event. this is the website I use, and although it says optussmartpay.com I don't know, but could be a service used by the ATO (?) as the transactions all go through without a problem.

ATO - Card Payment

this is now on my QF account as a result of paying my personal tax:

Date
Description Qantas Points Status Credits
Wed 11 Apr 2018 QANTAS AMEX PREMIUM CARD 36,340 0

AMEX will give .5 points per dollar spent with the ATO.
Considering the 1.45% cc fee, it's expensive but as mentioned above money I had to spend in any event.

If you're happy paying 1.45% for 0.5ppd use rewardpay.com.au and pay 2.4%+GST and get full point earn on your Amex

Amex should be ashamed of themselves charging 2.9 cents for a point when they clearly buy those points for about a cent plus GST. Even if they were paying 1.5 cents plus GST the 2.9 cent sales figure gives Amex a fat profit.
