We are staying in a hotel room on the Gold Coast for 3 nights. Cost is $645 per night. The aircon does not work in our suite which makes for a warm sleep. It is not able to be fixed and the hotel is fully booked during our stay.
The reception staff said they will provide compensation but asked me what I wanted. I said I will think about it (jump on this forum).
Anyone know if there is a standard formula or other compensation that has a basis?
Thanks in advance

Cost is $645 per night.

A total refund would be appropriate. Air conditioning is a basic in this location and especially at this price. If not working the room shouldn't be used.

What brand is the hotel? And do you have any status with them?

How long is a piece of string? What would the usual non easter / Commonwealth games tariff be? Maybe $200.00 per night? If so, I would ask for a reduction to that rate.

Two things that spring to mind are either request they book you at another equivalent hotel with an equivalent room. Alternatively, how much money do YOU feel would make you happy as compensation.

If it is hot and humid, HVRs comment above may be appropriate....I would start from there and offer at most $100-150 per night. I would also ask for a couple of fans :)

At $645 a night that is very expensive. The air conditioning should be working. I wonder when it stopped ;). I think you need a good chunk of that money back. It’s summer. And as mentioned, a fan but they are pretty noisy at night. I’m guessing there’s no overhead fan? They work quite well in Qld.

Personally I'd be demanding a full refund and walking to another hotel. But A/C in a hotel is almost always very important to me.

Wow, great responses, I do love this forum and the level of support shown.
It is Reflections Tower Two at Coolangatta and it is a 3 bedroom apartment- hence the price. No status at this independent place.
They have now bought in a portable A/C unit.
I like the suggestion of half. I’ll give that a try.
Thanks to all.

Thanks to the mods moving this to the correct thread. I did search beforehand but couldn’t find the thread.

I would refuse to pay anything. No AC on the GC means it’s not fit for human habitation and a breach of contract. New equivalent appartment in this or other hotel or no payment. And who else are they going to rent it to?

I'd ask them what they're offering before you tell them what you want and really I'd want a cash refund and not vouchers or more free nights. For me if there was no aircon I wouldn't be paying but I'd be moving out

When I first saw the AFF email about this thread, I thought, "hmmm...$645 per night in Australia, that would make it a 3 star serviced apartment, deduct the air conditioning and becomes a 2 star - yep, about the right price then".
Best of luck - tell us what you managed to get.

Righty, finally got a chance to reply.
The hotel emailed me and offered 20% refund. It was on one of those crazy work days where I needed to move this off the critical path so I accepted it. Then, later that night I had regret that I didn't negotiate harder. Even 25% would have been a win. Perhaps it was the very apologetic email they sent that gave me some pity.

Now in the same boat. Booked in for 4 nights at Gem apartments 2 bed/bath.
$425.00 per night. Was contacted yesterday to say air con not working when we arrive but would be fixed today.
Tradies came this morning, nope can’t fix, next week before parts arrive. Can’t offer alternative rooms as fully booked for the Gand Prix. Not even going to try looking for alternative on such a busy weekend.
Going to supply portable air cons for next 3 nights.
Let’s see what they offer for compensation.....

And were they forthcoming?

Would only offer $250.00 take it or leave it. Still waiting for it to show on my card.
It was one of those stays were lots of things were wrong.
Cleaners laundry bag with old linen & tool box with cleaning items left in our kitchen.
Only 2 bowls for 4 pax (4 of everything else)
No soap to wash hands
2 bedside lamps - no bulbs
torn carpet
supplied 2 portable air-cons which were noisy, did not reach into front bedroom which was 32 degrees in the afternoon.
Choice - air-con or black out roller blinds - you could not have both, as the exhaust tube had to go out the window, so the blinds could not come all the way down.
Power cord to the portable air cons stretched across walk way, pulled out of power point twice as we tripped over the cord.
No evac plans on back of the entrance door.

The pool was good......
