I am seeking a premium economy and or business class flight to Paris for my wife and I departing Melbourne or Sydney on either 26th or 27 Sept. We plan to spend approx 2 weeks in France, with a trade fair in Paris from 28thSept to 1st Oct being the only essential. We plan on visiting optical factories around France and perhaps a trp to Colonge Germany but this is not essential. Europe is quite easy to traverse so can look at a different point of departure. We will spend approximately 2 weeks away before flying back to Melbourne/Sydney. I have a total of 415000 Velocity points, and will likely have another 55000 in a week or two, which I can use to one or both tickets would like to use towards the flights. The trip is a business one for me, so i can pay for my ticket, but would like to use the points to help my wife, understanding that we would like to be in the same class on the same flight. I prefer flying on Virgin associated flights but seem unlikely to maintain Platinium status with the changes to SIN SC earn rates announced the other day. Looking at reasonable costs if possible, and would consider a stop-over or two. Hope this is enough information, and happy with fees to pay for help. Cheers

So just looking at a reward for your wife (assuming you're paying for your fare):

Business Class
26/9 SQ228 MEL-SIN departing Melbourne 15:40 (777)
2hr, 45min transit in SIN
27/9 SQ336 SIN-CDG departing Singapore 00:15, arriving CDG 07:35 (A380)

Returning on:

10/10 SQ335 CDG-SIN departing Paris 12:00 (A380)
55min transit in SIN
11/10 SQ207 SIN-MEL departing Singapore 07:45 (A350) or could take SQ217 at 11:00 which is an A380)

210,000 Krisflyer miles + $269.48 AUD in taxes.

210,000 Krisflyer = 283,500 Velocity points

Your flight to buy would be the same flights as your wifes award flight, but cost is $6,468.48 AUD.

Premium Economy
Premium Economy has options for award flight (175,000 points + same taxes), at a cost to your ticket for approx $3,500-$4,000, depending on flights you can book as award. I dont think this represents great value - given the leap from PY to J.

I've only searched for CDG on the dates you've asked - obviously could fly out of other ports, availability pending. Happy to help if you can specify more detail :)

There was a premium companion sale on QF, I wonder if you could ticket yours at "full price", and hers be the 2nd (free) for 1???

Although @tizey has provided a great option already.

Thanks Tizey, I had looked at the $6500 ish price for business class for myself so that confirms my casual investigation, good news about the award for my wife. If i could ask a silly question does SQ allow a purchase of an economy ticket and allow points to upgrade? or is that a bridge too far? I will discuss things with my wife to see what she feels. She has always enjoyed SQ in Y but i felt a move up to the front may be worth it. I assume the 777 in the MEL-SIN would be a 777ER, is it worth a J seat in this compared to a 350 or 380? just me thinking out loud.

I'm not overly familiar with upgrades, but I believe sq allow upgrades of one class... So on the a380 (SIN to CDG) would have to be a PY to upgrade to J, as you can't go from Y to J as that's two classes difference. Not sure on the points required to do so though from a PY fare.

Re 777 - yes it is a 777er. I believe it's more comparable to the a380 than the a350. I havent flown J in the 777er (only F luckily), but reports are the a350 is the one to avoid due to the narrow footwell in J. The a380 and 777er doesn't have that problem (a380 is very comfy in J).

And to add - if an award flight is available, an upgrade should be as I believe they come from the same bucket.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

From memory, the cost to upgrade is quite close to the full cost of a saver award, so it's not good value. Plus the restrictions above about 1 class only.

The same flights via the VA website are available at 278000 points plus $269 for business award
But for my paid flights $7763.48 so much more than the price you found tizey.

Ah awesome! I forget that SQ is able to be booked direct with VFF as its been a while since I've booked J flights (the last few have been F.. ;)). Cheaper points too! Just make sure you can reserve your seats sitting together and your set!

The price I found was Business Lite - which is a restricted flight in terms of cancellations (not allowed), but you can make booking changes for $330. Make sure you're comparing apples with apples if you need flexibility. With that said, the Business Standard ($200 change, $330 cancellation fee) is $7116, and Flexi ($260 cancellation, $0 change) is $7666... all via singaporeair.com

Have you thought about using Etihad?
The high taxes are their biggest downfall but it’s certaintly another option worth looking at
Hi Jase05,

The price of Etihad was a bit high and have no idea how points transfers work with them, i also looked at Emirates and Cathay and have no points to spend with them, which is a shame as i love HK and would have done a stopover.

Etihad would set you back about $6800 but A380 all the way there and back.
Reward seats can be booked directly through VA site and would set you back approx 280,000 points plus $1300 in taxes which is the outrageous bit. You do have the option of burning an extra 220,000 points and paying nothing extra.
The taxes are a right royal scam and a half
