Your wife is elegible for bonus.and you as referrer of course

Am I able to refer her for the Explorer card specifically though? Even though I don't hold the Explorer card? I have the Velocity Platinum and Plat Edge, and if I try to refer from either it produces a link specific to those cards. Is there a way around that?

Amex did make some recent changes to broaden the cards you can refer others too, but i believe the cards still need to be in the same awards family. Unfortunately this would exclude you from referring your wife, as I understand it.

Good luck!

Does anyone know if being a supplementary cardholder excludes someone from getting bonus points with the Explorer card (or any new Amex for that matter)?

Background is my wife has not held an Amex account in her own name for about 2 years. I have Amex Plat Edge and Amex Velocity Platinum, and she is a supplementary cardholder on both. I want to start using the Explorer, primarily for the improved ongoing earn rates, but clearly I would not be eligible for any bonus. So now I'm thinking I could get my wife to apply, so she gets bonus points, and then she adds me as a supplementary cardholder. Anyone know if this will work?

The T&Cs don't seem to make it clear - they refer to new members being eligible, and my wife is not a current member as I understand it so that sounds good. It does exclude "card members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period" - as I said she does hold Amex issued cards, but if she is not a member, that shouldn't matter.

IME you should be fine.

My +1 is a supplementary cardholder on my DJ Amex. She recently applied for a QF Ultimate Amex in her own name and received the 100k sign-on bonus.

She then applied for her own DJ Amex card while still holding a supplementary card on mine. Again she received the sign-on bonus (and I received a referral bonus because she used my referral link).

So go for it; and make sure she applies using a referral link from your account (once she clicks on the link, she should be able to choose any alternative Amex by clicking on the button that says something like see our other cards).

Good luck, JV

Thanks for all of the replies. I can confirm that after generating the referral link from my Platinum Edge, it offered her the choice of selecting a few different cards, including the Explorer - and offered her 60k bonus points instead of the usual 50k.

However, while I was filling out the application (ahem, I mean while my wife was filling out the application ...), I suddenly realised I had gotten my dates mixed up. It's more than 2 years since she last applied for an Amex, but she held it until about 16 months ago, so looks like we need to wait a while yet.

Good to catch that one before the application went through :)

I have just received my DJ amex platinum a few days ago, just spending my 4 seperate transactions.

The rules are different to what I read in previous comments (I made sure I checked before applying, by contacting them by phone. They have no record of my previous DJ card of 18+ months ago).

rules:

"Customers applying for the David Jones American Express Staff Card or Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other David Jones Credit Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer."

I should receive my 40k points very soon :)

I lucked out with my 6 month old amex original platinum card. Didn't thing of the 18 month rule, lost 50k or more in points :(

Might cancel that card soon!

I have the dj storecard does not say amex. I presume still not eligable

Unless you have had a DJ Amex credit card within the last 18 months, you are eligible AFAIK.

Would you like a referral?
thankyou unfortunately family ahve already offered but I wasnt sure if i would be eligible.dont really need another amex but for the points ok

Just had the DJs Amex card waved in our faces by Ms DJs when Mrs Pineapple was about to make a purchase there. The discount using ‘their’ card was about the same as the $99 joining fee for the black card. At 2.25 QFF points per dollar for groceries and petrol, this looks like quite a handy earner.

So go for it; and make sure she applies using a referral link from your account (once she clicks on the link, she should be able to choose any alternative Amex by clicking on the button that says something like see our other cards).

Looks like the ‘same family’ for referral bonuses still the case, unfortunately. I have a QF Amex Ultimate card too and sent a referral link, but unfortunately it only linked to cards in the Amex QFF family. Never mind, we’ll take the form back to Ms DJs tomorrow, who will no doubt get a bonus if some sort. She was very enthusiastic about us applying ;)

Cheers skip.

Would you like me to send you a referral link (if it's not too late)?

Why didn't I think of that? Alas Mrs Pineapple raced back with the form first thing next morning  Much appreciate the offer though!

Cheers skip

Hope this is the right thread but mods please move if not. I have had a DJ Amex for some years and its been great but have signed up recently for other cards with big bonuses and my anniversary is this week for renewing DJ. I think I read somewhere to call and cancel the card but also to downgrade to their base or store card for a few months and then resign up to receive the bonus again...is that correct ? Any advice appreciated.

As a data point, I called to cancel my DJ Amex in January and was offered 20,000 points as a retention bonus.

Yesterday I was talking to an Amex agent about another card and out of the blue she stated that you can get the sign-on bonus for the DJ card while holding another Amex card and vice versa, AND that the exclusion period for the DJ card was 2 months. I asked her to repeat that and she confirm that, after cancelling the DJ card, you only have to wait two months before being eligible for the sign-on bonus again. Note that the terms and conditions clearly state that you are not eligible for the sign-on bonus if you have held any DJ credit card in the previous 18 months.

I might have to take one for the team on this one.

I just spoke with DJ about cancelling my card and what was on offer..nothing for me as they gave me 15000 bonus points last year to stay, she talked about changing to the DJ store card but if I did that then the 18 month rule came into place before applying for another DJ card..have a few weeks to think about it before fee is due.....

Just out of interest, what MR program does the DJ Amex bonus points get added to? Is it possible to link the DJ Amex card to Ascent Premium, for example?

I'm finding Amex pretty confusing on their advice, compounded by this 'same family' description too. I would like a new Amex card (but really just a new bonus), but am holding the freebie Velocity FF card (and the DJs). I am about to neck the freebie VA card and wait out the 18 months. Unless anyone has you-beaut ideas on how to get around that 18 month exclusion?
