Hi all,

I'm after some advice for where to stay in New York and when to book accommodation. I've booked a trip there arriving the 1st of November and am planning on staying for 8 nights. I understand accommodation in New York is expensive and the rooms small (which is fine), but I'm not sure what's a reasonable price and what's not.

Am looking to stay on Manhattan, ideally somewhere central (but am okay to catch the subway some days too), at a cost of under AU$400 per night. What are your recommendations for accommodation?

From what I can tell, the prices out in November are fairly high for what might be a 'lower season'. I'm considering booking a refundable rate and then cancelling closer to the time if a better deal comes up. Is this something that's common with New York hotel pricing and what's your advice?

Thanks in advance!

I would recommend The Residence Inn, Downtown/WTC spent seven nights there in October and good size rooms with a kitchenette, reasonable breakfast included, laundry in the basement etc. Not central but only a short ride on the subway, also nice and quiet on the weekends once Wall street closes for the weekend. Subway within a block, WTC, Century 21 across the street.

We stayed at the Westin Times Square NYC. Great location we got a good deal through a travel agent, but I just looked at prices and maybe there is something on. It is very expensive. We also stayed at The Hilton Midtown which is also a good location.
We then travelled around the USA and returned to NYC and stayed at the Salisbury Hotel up near Central Park. It is older style hotel but good prices and we did have a little kitchenette.
I think prices may be very expensive as it Halloween weekend, and Americans do like their celebrations.

It's the weekend of the New York Marathon (4/11) which always pushes up prices unfortunately.

The Roger Smith on Lexington Ave has good sized rooms for a reasonable price, and only 2 blocks from several subway stations.

There's a choice between chain hotels and a range of more independent hotels. The chain hotels (various brands under Hilton, Marriott, Starwood, Holiday Inn) are often what I call "cookie cutter' hotels, same layout, size etc, and can equally substitute one for another, these are quite acceptable, as long as reasonably close to subway station (they invariably are).

In New York, several times I have split my stay between hotels in two different neighbourhoods, for a minor inconvenience of moving, you can save a bit of money and at the same time experience different parts of the city (although you can easily do that via subway anyway).

Another thing, NYC hotel prices move around a lot, so one option is to find a good cancellable rate that you are happy with and book that well in advance and change if prices come down (or a better hotel comes available for the same price). If you are a member of RACQ, several chains have "AAA rates" (Hilton for sure does), that are cancellable free of charge (up to 2-4 days before arrival), and usually very competitive with advance purchase/non refundable rates (eg, I picked a random hotel in Hilton chain - $263++ USD for advance purchase non refundable vs $269 for AAA rate cancellable free of charge up to 72 hours before arrival).

Pretty solid advice from Dajop.

I stayed at the IC Barclay. It was fine, luxurious and classic sure. I stayed on points and would never pay their asking rate.

I wandered into the Novotel times square, it looks more modern and stylish and is a good price. I would recommend that if it's your style.
