Hello AFF community,
I will be going to Europe for the first time in June this year (UK, Netherlands, Croatia, Sweden and Norway)
I would like to know if travelling within the Schengen area is still free of passport control ?
Or there are passport checks now, due to terrorism concerns ?

Thank you for all replies.

Nope you're all good schengen is still as free as ever just back from Europe and only had to break out the passports on arrival, and then when we popped over to the UK.

You will still be up for some border controls, but that will depend on the order you're travelling :)

Croatia and the UK are not in the schengen zone so you will be passport checked going in and out of Croatia and the UK.

Border control in France due to state of emergency but that doesn't appear to apply to you.

It has been a while but there are controls now between Austria and Germany

FWIW, if you are travelling by bus from Italy through Slovenia into Croatia you will be border checked twice - in about 200 metres. Can't recall exactly where this occurred but we had left Italy and I think we were about to cross into Croatia from Slovenia. The first checkpoint will possibly see your passport taken and returned to you at the second checkpoint. Not being told this freaked us (and the other foreign passengers on the bus) out a bit as we left the first checkpoint sans passports. However, it's standard procedure and you will get it back at the second checkpoint. Enjoy your travels!!!

Thank you for the reply and well wishes:) For this trip, i will not be going on the route you just described. But i will keep it in mind for future references :)

You’d expect passport controls between Solvinia and Croatia as the latter is not in the Schengen Area. Travelling overland from Italy you pass through a small neck of Solvinia enroute to Croatia. How far was it between the the first checkpoint where they took your passports and the second, where they returned them. Were they Croatian officials at both checkpoints? I too would be apprehensive about leaving without my passport.

Edit, I just saw you said 200m. Were the border guards Croation at both checkpoints?

Good question. Not 100% sure to be honest. All the foreigners (including us) on the bus were doing the OMG moment when BP jumped off the bus with the passports and bus left the checkpoint with no explanation. I'll assume they were a mix of Slovenian and Croatian, but am not really sure.

I crossed from Croatia to Slovenia last year on a roadtrip. I was stamped out of Croatia but not back into Schengen. Resulted in some headaches a few weeks late when exiting EU via Helsinki when they couldn't find my entry into Schengen from this side trip. I had entered Schengen a couple of weeks earlier before I went to Croatia so eventually let me go.

Oh that's interesting. We travelled from Italy through Slovenia into Croatia and return. Passport stamped both ways and no problem leaving EU (via Spain). I'll note that for future reference though. Plan to head back to Croatia next year.

Had to show my passport to Swiss police aboard a train from Italy. But it was just a look, no stamps, no scans or anything else.

Same by road, but there they'll collect the road tax off you :).

Yes you need a vignette to use the Swiss motorways, but not the standard roads. It costs Sfr 40. The same applies in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria.

They didn't ask where we were going when we went though - just hand over the cash!

And me in three weeks time!
