Yes, assuming you want to visit Asia (or even transit it). Other rules are, if you land at one city airport (eg Tokyo HND) and depart from another (Tokyo NRT), that will count as a sector; plus any other land transits.
My upcoming itinerary:

Starting continent, Australia/Pacific

First intercontinental sector
SYD-xLAX-JFK counted as one sector; this is an unusual case. So Nth America second continent.

Four of six allowed sectors in Nth America
JFK-xMIA-PTY-xMIA-DFW

Second intercontinental sector:
DFW-DOH So Europe, third continent.

Four of four allowed sectors in Europe
DOH-FCO-xLHR-TLV-LHR

Third intercontinental sector:
LHR-HND So Asia the fourth continent

Four of four allowed sectors in Asia:
HND-xHKG-BOM-CMB-SIN

Fourth intercontinental sector:
SIN-MEL

You might also go Australia-Sth America-Africa-Asia-Australia as a XONE4

I booked with them late last year for travel to Europe in April this year. First time I have used a TA in many years. They were very good to deal with.
Off in 12 days time to EU via HKG. QF and AY. Cheers

Discount business.

But to be sure it will depend on the actual fare class the tickets are issued in. Would be very unusual for sale fares to be classed as business and not discount business

Sorry, I am away from my records and cannot give you the fare class or actual points. I will try to soon. Cheers

Thanks Ausfox, that a great points haul.

Interesting you were via HEL more than once, i didnt think backtracking was allowed on RTW?

Contemplating doing RTW in J with AY in 2019 (if I can keep it around the $6k mark), something like SYD - SIN or HKG - HEL (haven't decided on other Europe cities yet would love to do Scandinavia) - NYC - ORD or SFO - SYD.

Happy to do short euro flights with an LCC if cant squeeze into RTW ticketing.

My goal in 2019 will be to finally qualify for Gold and also accumulate enough points to claim a classic reward RTW in 2020.

Whilst I fly quite frequently for work it is mostly SYD-MEL in economy so not huge SCs, and my international trip this year is a classic reward so wont be earning on my flights.

The European side trip is thrown in. AY hubs at HEL so in and out via there. Cheers

Further, AY often have a bare bones RTW with only one stop in Asia, EU and USA. Less status though of course.

Do you happen to know if the Europe side trip be open jaw, as long as you resume from HEL eventually ?

You need to have a chat with a TA about the minor details. I am not one sorry.
