Hi, newbie to this forum & a novice FF. I'm after some advice of plane/flight selection please. My mother is 82 & has been an economy traveller yearly for the last 40 odd years & I am planning on taking her on one of her last trips in Business. Looking at the current Qatar companion deal flying from DPS-DOH-CDG (rtn). There is a real mix of planes to choose from & the following is the outbound schedule:

DPS – DOH Connection DOH – CDG Duration

1. QR 0965, Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner 1hr 5min QR 0037, Airbus A350-900 17hr 30min
2. QR 0963, Boeing 777-300ER 1hr 40min QR 0041, Boeing 777-300ER 18hr 10min
3. QR 0961, Airbus A330-300 2hr 10min QR 0039, Airbus A380-800 19hr
4. QR 0963, Boeing 777-300ER 7hr 50min QR 0039, Airbus A380-800 24hr 30min
5. QR 0961, Airbus A330-300 9hr 40min QR 0037, Airbus A350-900 26hr 20min
6. QR 0965, Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner 11hr 25min QR 0041, Boeing 777-300ER 27hr 50min
7. QR 0963, Boeing 777-300ER 15hr 20min QR 0037, Airbus A350-900 31hr 50min
8. QR 0965, Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner 17hr 35 min QR 0039, Airbus A380-800 34hr 10min
9. QR 0961, Airbus A330-300 20hr QR 0041, Boeing 777-300ER 36hr 40min

From my research on Seatguru & Expertflyer the 777 & A330 are older in style & are the 2-2-2 configuration. Although from what I can determine A330 (V2) is 1-2-1. So I am assuming for outbound Option1 (787/A350 combo) or Option 8 (787/A380 combo) will give us the best experience? Return flights have less options:

A350/A330 18hr 45min
A380/777 19hr 15min
A380/A330 25hr 5min
777/777 25hr 40min
350/787 27hr 45min
777/A330 31hr 30min
A380/787 34hr 5min
A350/777 36hr 55min

Can any of the plane guru's advise me on which planes I should select &/or which version (V1 or V2) of the A330 this route would have. I have tried talking with Qatar customer service but with limited luck.I have previously flown on Etihad (KL-AUH-LHR) A380 & A330 & obviously there is a big different between the 2 planes - so I am just wanting to select the best options for my Mums flights. Many thanks Lisa

Welcome, Lisa Whelan.

The 787s and A350s have the best J product (possibly of any airline, let alone just Qatar) so you'll want to start there. That said, the 777s are perfectly fine and if your Mother is a little claustrophobic, on the larger side or prefers a bit more room to room then arguably that's a better option. The seats have less privacy but 90% of you is 'exposed' in bed mode and very free to move about (rolling, turning etc.) whereas the A350/787 seat has probably about a third of your body under the console and a smaller spot for your feet.

The A380, of course, has the bar too. And if you're looking to maximise the whole J experience I would look for a minimum of two hours on the ground in Doha, probably three, especially if your Mother is a little slow on her legs. There's also a reasonable chance that on some flights you'll end up at a remote bay and have to be bussed to the terminal.

I've had problems with Seat Guru in the past with discrepancies so I don't rely on the site too much anymore.

If you post the dates you're looking at one of us will check another website, ExpertFlyer, to get a better idea of what the A333 arrangements are.

Thank you Danger. Dates for flights are relatively flexible looking around 4 April 2018 departure, 18 April 2018 return. Also, my Mum is a very young agile 82 year old, loves a party & a drink so the Bar is a real plus.Cheers Lisa.

The J seats in the QR A350, A380 and B787 are the same as those used by VA in their A332 and B77W (BE Super Diamond).

A very nice J seat...

I've been told by Qatar Facebook that QR041 DOH-CDG is the new 777 equiped with QSuites ...can anyone confirm this? Many thanks

QR961 at 12.35am on 4 April is showing as 2-2-2 flatbeds in J. Unless you're prepared to pay in the vicinity of AUD300 for a room at the transit hotel, I would suggest this is going to be your best bet. It also has a seven hour layover which is not too bad to connect with QR37 to CDG. It doesn't arrive into CDG until 9pm, though, which means realistically you're not getting downtown until close to midnight.

Taking the evening departure (QR963) requires an eight hour overnight layover. While the QR lounge is great it's a long overnight. The only upside to taking that flight is that it connects to QR39 at 7.30am which is the A380 flight to CDG. If you were interested in going on a little tour of Doha (not that there's really all that much to see) then that flight also would be an option. Visas are now free for stays up to, I think, 90 days for Australians in Qatar.

The morning departure (QR965) has an 11 hour layover.

The return, to me, would depend on what I took on the outbound. I'd want the A380 at least once and the 787/359 at least once. QR960 on the 18th is also showing as 2-2-2 and flatbeds.

Take at least a flight with an A380. I think you, plus your mother will be extremely impressed with a bar at 40,000ft!

If it's the 777-300ER, yes they have been flying that route since late September :)
So I'd really try to somehow fit in an A380 and the new Q-Suite fitted 777 in your trip!

I had the Q Suite CDG-DOH (QR95). I felt a bit claustrophobic and cramped, but that may be just me. I prefer a longer line of sight, so no apartments for me! I did ask for and received a change from a backward facing seat to a forward facing one. Another phobia?

Is the Q Suite available on QR flights into OZ?, want to book 2 x J mid year on last leg of world trip..

last keg is LHR/DOH/BNE so hoping for Q maybe it'll change by then.
