Woke up this morning to an email from SPG promoting another round of discounted starpoint purchases.

Could be of interest to those wanting to redeem a cheaper night in one of their more expensive properties or looking to make up a FF balance.

Must buy a minimum of 5000 points to get the discount and seems a max of 30,000 points can be purchased.

Holding out for the targeted bonus of 50% I got last year.. But this promo ending end Dec decreases the likelihood of a concurrent overlapping promo

By my calculations a 35% discount is the equivalent of a 54% bonus, I.e. this seems better .

Sorry should have been clearer. Last year's targeted promo was 50% discount. I bought the points for 1.75cpm. This promo has then at 2.275cpm

What are people's opinions on buying these points to the n transfer to say VFF? I've got business class redemptions in mind and along with the current promo on virgin would go nicely. Thanks.

Really depends on what value you place the redemption side and the route(s) you wish to use them on. It’s not a clear cut answer.

Fair enough. I personally think i'll get good value out of it so I'll probably go ahead and max out the points purchase. Appreciate your response Scwappy.

In my view very poor value.

Thank you for responding Dr Ralph. Do you mind explain why you think this is of poor value!? And any ways to maximise their value
Buy them at a cheaper price or when there is a better US $ conversion rate are the obvious suggestions.

I based my statement on how many points I needed buy hotel rooms for in the US in the last 6 months. I used SPG/Marriott points for around 75 nights earlier this year. Based on points I know I needed for rooms it would have meant that around $600 AUD was needed for a $250 US a night hotel room. Hence my statement of bad value.

Of course depending on the price for the hotel room and/or another reward you were looking at it may represent better value. But paying $600 AUD to get $250 US is value is not for me.

Appreciate the insight you have given Dr Ralph. Will take this into consideration, thank you.

With the 5K point bonus for transferring 20K SPG points into FF points, you're paying approx 2.4c a FF point.

So as the Dr said, not the best value.
