For Diamonds, full breakfast in restaurant downstairs is free :) Not sure about the coffee tax as I didn't order one :)

Diamond - BNE - no coffee tax for me last visit (end Sept - Riverfire) but i've had fellow diamonds complain about getting charge THE coffee tax in BNE

Had 2 nights at H-BNE in July (I think) for a conference and coffee tax was applied each morning.

Yes, I saw the coffee machine was gone from breakfast at the DT Cairns last weekend. Very disappointing.
Although, the room I was upgraded to "Ocean and mountain view" had a knock-off Nespresso style machine and two capsules! I didn't think to go back to the room and make a coffee to bring to breakfast! :)

As I started this thread, I'd best update it. Recently (past month) DT-CNS and H-CNS have offered me full breakfast (for 3 even, but with the coffee tax), so I was pretty happy with that (looked like teething issues had been bedded down to allow at least diamonds a full breakie). Last stay at DT-CNS was rubbish as far as the breakfast was concerned. Their coffee machine has broken (not surprising at the amount of use it received) and they've decided not to replace it, so pay the tax or have the muck, and the breakie upgrade fee was back, oh and they changed the breakie times without advising the guests.

I was reasonably happy with sharing my stays in CNS between Hilton and Double Tree, but I'm a bit over the tour group mentality of DT. Time for a change I think. Might have to be ... HI to see if they've improved.

Just today, I cancelled all my upcoming DT-CNS bookings. My last stay didn't even see me getting a HH floor room, so I didn't even have the Nespresso with their two capsules! The place has too much of a "tour group" mentality for my liking.

My experience with hilton as a Diamond

Conrad HK - 2 full breakfast even if booked as one person room.
Hilton Shanghai - the Diamond fact sheets says there is an upcharge, the check in guy said there is an upcharge, the girl at the restaurant said its two full breakfast
Hilton Shenzhen - two full breakfast

In need of a few stays to retain Diamond and not feeling like shelling out $400plus/night at Sydney booked a stay here for early december. I told myself last time to avoid at all cost and stick with the Hilton but need to break up a 3 night stay so am hoping it is not as bad as your stays back in October and they may have improved.

Not a coffee tax issue.
But does anyone agree with me that the tea bags in the room are absolutely appalling.

I shall be carrying my own Twinings tea . :)

I get those at Mantra hotels-a couple of stars down from Hiltons.
The price is good though. Staying three nights in one of the Mantra properties in BNE next month. Basic room, but less than $200 all in via orbitz.

i honestly cannot remember the last time i paid for a breakfast at a hotel. Being Pt in Marriott and SPG its free, but if i have to pay for it i go outside and get something local. I really struggle to think about paying for often sometimes sub-standard breakfast.

I stayed last week for one night not expecting a lot and was pleasantly surprised. Room was ready in the morning, upgraded to waterfront balcony level 5 from a base room. Usual vouchers for evening use in the bar plus a third voucher for a Honors hour (just needed to be a member) from 5-6pm in the bar which included 2 types of canapes and beer or wine. It is only on monday, wednesday and Fridays with a dozen or so people turning up.

Breakfast was for full buffet and the coffee machine was working. The Hilton coffee machine is now gone though with only filtered available, maybe they sent it to the DT.

I've been lucky enough to not encounter the coffee tax to date. Only once have I been given the option to upgrade to the "full" breakfast, and that was at Hilton Universal City. For US$12 we decided to enjoy the toast and muffins instead.

But have had fully cooked breakfasts recently at Surfers Paradise, Nagoya, Tokyo Bay and the Orange County Doubletree, so it's not terribly rare just yet.
