IIRC if you had bought shares when CSL went public, you would have made a pretty penny.
If I had bought $10,000 CBA shares in 1994 and $10,000 Woolworths shares not long after my share portfolio would be doing quite well. This is not hindsight. I had just paid off my first loan and had some spare cash and was seriously considering investing but I was talked out of it. :(

Just wish I had access to a time machine so I can go back to 1994 and kick my butt into buying these shares.

I bought shares when I was 17 and each year I spend more time on dealing with duds than winners. Fifty years later I accept that getting every purchase correct is not possible.
Today the 13 shares and bonds in our Superfund are all in green so I have to be careful not to think I am a guru. A time machine would have been helpful.

I hear you there. And timing is important when to sell. There’s nothing like a company making an announcement out of the blue to completely unhinge everything. I’m talking to you Telstra!

What's the saying? You have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your Prince(-ess).

Share loss clouds can have a silver lining - my share capital losses will nicely offset the capital gain on an investment property. :)

Got a bucket load of member shares when ??? (I think it was NRMA) went public and instead of dividends, both hubby and I must have ticked a box that said reinvest in more shares and they are now worth a nice amount that I didnt have to do anything to earn. Told hubby if I ever want that really expensive 1st Class trip in Alaska or to buy a kidney, we can sell them first. Until then, they can sit in the corner, doing their bit. Capital gains is going to suck

The most important thing in life is health.

The next most important thing is to try and retire early.

I hate working for people in managerial positions who do not have a clue what they are doing.

Reading news reports and Im very confused over the use of the N word.

Its a horrible word, Im not going to say it, I never ever think to say it but there is a culture with black youngins that do say it. Its in songs, on social media, movies ect.

I understand that apparently its ok for black people to say it but not white (and I dont want to say it!) but is it a matter of people protest too much when a white person is caught saying it? Is the outrage misplaced when the youth culture has made the word socially acceptable?

I do not believe that the people back in the 50s & 60s, those that fought segregation, those that were spat on, had dogs set on them and bashed, chased out of restaurants are OK with their grandchildren walking around calling themselves the N word.

The mixed message does my head in.

Any thoughts?

Edit: I would prefer that no one uses the word at all. Its not acceptable.

I am pretty sure Bill Cosby would have chastised young black men for using the N word. I guess he is sort of irrelevant now.

Comedian Bill Burr had a good bit on the use of N word. The N word with a soft "A" at end is more acceptable then a more racist N word with a hard "R" at the end.

Googling it looks like it might be what is called 'reappropriation'.

Isn't it the same as any group being able to describe themselves how they want? Kind of like you can't be derogatory to yourself. But that doesn't open the door to others being able to use the terms or expression. I have Lebanese friends who describe themselves, in jest, as 'Lebbos', but that's not an invitation for me, from a different ethnic group, to also use it.

Other words are 'wog' or 'cough' or 'queer'. Members of those groups are free to use the terms if they wish. Others using them may be confused with expressing racism or otherwise being pejorative.

I also swear that before Games of Thrones, I rarely heard the word cough or the C word. Now its not uncommon to hear them either on TV, social media and in some conversations. Again, not me but its used more freely now.

Not necessarily John.I am very happy still working at the age of 70.
I plan on MrP doing the same. Can’t imagine having someone hanging around and getting into my space. Going to the supermarket. Inspecting everything I do. Nup.

Denali - it’s fine for black Africans to use whatever term their wish to describe themselves although not sure the N word comes into their vocabulary as it’s everything to do with slavery. It’s when others not of that race use the words that gets into bother.

But would you have held your nerve & retained the magical 2 companies during the down times since 1994. It is a bit like people lamenting they did not change their investment options just prior to a crash. I am also sure we have all read stories of people reacting to a crash, change what was supposed to be their investment profile & then further lament they were not in the market when the recovery has taken place. Bit like trying to pick the exact date of the top or bottom of a market

Aren't you also retired? ;)

I get no enjoyment from working other than the exact moment the fortnightly pay hits the account. Oh and the flying can be fun.

I assume (or hope) that this is said in jest or to get a reaction. In over 30 years of working there was only a couple of brief times I didn't enjoy my job (a couple of rough times in investment banking) but otherwise I've had a great time, and when I was on a salary I usually put in far more hours each week than I was strictly paid for, because, yes, I was enjoying myself.

I get tremendous enjoyment from my job. The job I have been doing for over 30 years now. And I know it's hard to believe but I'm actually quite good at what I do.

Management on the other hand are a different story. Poor decisions, one after the other leaves a bitter taste. One restructure after another leaves an even more bitter taste.

For me the negatives far outweigh the positives. We are all moving desks again. They are designing call centre type of desks for everyone. Trouble is we are not call centre staff. We need space to think and develop. We don't need distractions.

Waiting to see where I will fit into the new sardine can. The environment around me is more important to me than the enjoyment I get from the job.

But there is nowhere to go. Not easy to find a similar job and the company knows this and exploits accordingly. Only 8 months until long service. Then the shackles are off and I will be free to make a decision. Maybe 12 months off will do me the world of good. Just maybe....

The principal at a school where I taught gave me some great advice. She said that when it was not fun any more it was time to go. I followed her advice (and should say that she did the same thing) and left teaching then spent 7 years in the PS and again when it became 'not fun', off I went. Life's too short to be miserable.

I have days when the only thing keeping me going is knowing every second week I get paid.

I have some gay friends that I will call 'poof' and they call me 'cough'. It is a way of taking back the word from a derogatory term to one of endearment. But I would be quite offended if a straight person used it as they would never have been the object of such language.
