West Hotel, Sydney, a Curio by Hilton hotel

I would expect room rates to be on the pricey side considering everything else in this part of Sydney is. But if it lowers the demand for the Hilton this will be a welcome change.

Not unfortunately. (The AFR article was early-Sep)

Key points.
Owner M&L Hospitality (also owns Hyatt Regency and Swissotel Sydney). Constructed by Multiplex
Theme of Waratahs and Classic Elegance
182 rooms with 4 suites. Looks like ground plus 5 levels. Also meeting rooms, restaurant and bars
Rates likely on mid $200 range (so cheaper than Hilton which I would say targets $300-500 Mon-Thu)

Singapore hotel giant M&L Hospitality, controlled by Singapore's cough family, has unveiled a theme of waratahs and classic elegance at its new-build hotel West Hotel at 65 Sussex Street in the Sydney CBD.

M&L Hospitality, which already owns Australia's biggest hotel, the Hyatt Regency – also at Sussex Street at Darling Harbour – will launch the new "upper scale" hotel in December, after a short year-long construction, led by Multiplex.

The West Hotel would be welcome relief to the hotel room-starved Sydney CBD especially when there hasn't been a new hotel built in the past 15 years, M&L chief executive Neil Maxwell said.

"By all means we will build another hotel, we have now done a few buildings. With all the infrastructure work happening there's just a lot going on in the city," he said.

The hotel will have 182 guest rooms including four suites, an internal courtyard, meeting space, restaurant and bar.

The Dining Room by West Hotel will be fine dining but details of the restaurant are yet to be released.

M&L is targeting the "Monday to Thursday" corporate market particularly that of the Barangaroo precinct around the corner, and local retail travellers. The group will name a hotel operator later in the year.

The name "West Hotel" is based on its western Sydney corridor location and hotel rates will likely be in the mid $200 a night range.

Asked why it chose to build a hotel so close to its existing Hyatt Regency, Mr Maxwell said hotel sites in Sydney were rare so they grabbed the partially approved site from developer Alfasi.

M&L now has 1443 hotel rooms across the city, including its newly refurbished Hyatt Regency and the five-star Swissotel on Market Street in the CBD.

I wonder when they will start accepting bookings. Could be a good way to get me two more nights to get to 10 for the current promo.

Hotel now shows on the website but not able to book yet. It only mentions December as the opening but no particular date. It states checkout as 12pm and parking is complimentary. This would be a major game changer for me considering I spend a lot on parking which could be used towards a better room or decent meal. Plus with only one suite upgrade in the last 6 months, upgrades are no longer high on my list of reasons to stay.
The one photo of a guestroom they show does look quite good.

The cynic in me was stirred by the reference to free parking. Whilst they may offer this as part of a weekend package I can't see it happening mid week, when they can get $50 - $80 day day for parking.

I was thinking the same thing as parking across the road is $60/night and I would think hotel parking may be around $30-$40. Not sure if they have parking onsite available so it may be just that they have not yet organized parking yet. When I am next at Sydney Hilton I hope to find out more.

Received an email this morning from Hilton with the subject line "Quick – book our lowest prices for Curio Collection by Hilton Sydney, NSW". Click through to book and met with "This hotel is expected to soon be joining the Hilton Portfolio of Brands but is not yet accepting reservations. It is scheduled to open in December 2017"

Well that was a waste of an email.

Our apologies for any confusion, the email was sent out in error. West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton is not yet accepting reservations, and is scheduled for a December 2017 opening.

We will share updates again when reservations open and look forward to welcoming you and the Australian Frequent Flyer community to the property.

And a warm welcome to AFF for Hilton AU :).

Are you just involved with the Sydney Curio, or are you open to questions about any AU Hilton group property?

Well that piques my curiosity (pun intended). Happy with Sussex Street. Happy that there is an alternative to the SYD Hilton so I can again use my Diamond status in SYD.

We have contacted Hilton AU as we would love their ongoing involvement in AFF - at very least on this property

Damn, have a Conference in SYD (Conv Centre) in mid January and it isn't on the list of approved hotels. Will just have to convince wife and kids to come down earlier and we can stay here so I can clock up some early nights.
