Hobart - things to do and where to stay

I booked a Hunter Room - asked nicely at check in and was upgraded to a water view but I was there mid week in Winter.

On MONA - yep. Did not enjoy it. And this is coming from someone who holds a degree in Art History! I think the biggest contributor to it was the need to use the headsets given their approach of no written material on the wall. I found it was a sensory overload and would have preferred to read a small card and then view it with my own lens, vs having to listen to this ongoing narrative.

Will be in Hobart in late October for a few nights with MrsDaver6. First time there for us too and interested to hear your thoughts.

Don't forget very close to Hobart is the Coal River Valley and its many wineries, restaurants and cheese places. The turn off is at Cambridge, on the expressway between the airport and the city.

If your thing is photography and chasing waterfalls, we really enjoyed our visit to Russell Falls. Its about 1.5hr drive from Hobart but super easy/mobility/pram friendly walk to the falls.

For the energetic, about 150 stairs up is another waterfall and about an hour walk to a 3rd set.. followed by a light meal at the cafe before going back to Hobart.

Landed up booking Macq 01 for four nights. First two with the LivingSocial deal and paid for the other two. Most hotels seemed pricey for the dates I needed and Macq 01 with that above combination worked out to be extremely competitive.

Any further dining recommendations for Hobart?

Close to maq1 is Frank ... and Argentinian restaurant which has had some good reviews (street level of the ugly square building you can't miss on Hobart's waterfront).

Muir's is very close; right on the docks, seafood. There is 'upstairs' - more formal, and downstairs, a bistro. Upstairs went off a few years ago, but I believe its improved again. Downstairs has always been good value - I recommend the marinated fish.

A bit out of town, maybe 30 mins from Maq1 in the Coal River Valley is the Riversdale winery and its French Bistro was recently awarded the best regional restaurant nationally in some awards.

North Hobart has the 'restaurant strip' in Hobart. I haven't been there for ages, so no suggestions sorry, but ask at the Hotel and they should suggest something.

maq1 is just across the road from your nemesis, Henry Jones Art Hotel.

I should have mentioned in my post up-thread. Coming to the new maq1 building is the fine dining restaurant from Frogmore Creek (winery in the Coal river Valley). They couldn't sustain the place out in the boonies, so its been transplanted into the city. Not sure when its going to open, but when it does, and if its anything like its previous incarnation, it will be sensational.

Im sorry but I dont get deconstructed foodie plates.

Visually pleasing but if I wanted to put a meal together to eat, I would have stayed at home.
