Are 70 SCs worth 120,000 FF points to keep WP?

Just got a call from Qantas and they mentioned that I'll be 70 SC short to keep WP this year.. (I've been neglecting the airlines as much as the forum it seems! Look to lose VA WP also if they aren't generous).. They offered to let me stay WP for 120,000 points.. I have LTG.. and plenty of points..

What do the brains trust think? Should I stick it out and say DYKWIA! or just pay the points or just drop down to gold and see how the common folk live for a while ;)

Thanks :)

Would 120,000 pts buy an ASA that earns 70 SC ?

That way you get to retain, and a trip for the points. Of course time/availability might be an issue.

The main benefit of retain is lower threshold for next year vs needing to reach the attain again.

Didn't know that there was ever an option to top-up your SCs by paying with points.

Yeah.. I've left it a bit late to think about flying.. only got next week..

Yes.. it's the first time I've heard of it.. but last time I didn't qualify (about 5 years ago) they gave it to me anyway as a good will gesture and I was about 100SC away.. Maybe this is their new "good will gesture"..

There is no way in this world I would 'donate' 120k FF points to retain WP, even more so if I was only 70SC away.

I am 1085 SC away from QF WP retain and would only consider 20-30k as an absolute maximum...

By the way.. I was wrong about VA.. I have 1044 SC for them and thought it would be the same deal but I only needed 800 SC to maintain WP.. so all good there.. WP just been confirmed :)

Yeah.. looked pricey to me.. especially since I have held WP for about 10 years...

I think 120k is way over the top. And when Qantas phones back I'd be letting them know 'Thanks, but not thanks. I'm Platinum with Virgin'.

Definitely wouldn't take that offer! Use all those points for flying, not lounging.

BTW would you have expected that you might be comped plat this year ... average for past 2 years and this one > plat requalifying mark?

To be honest RF I have been so busy lately that I haven't paid that much attention to my status.. If I had I probably would have picked up a couple extra domestic flights with QF and stayed WP with both.. I generally fly QF internationally as I have more points and can upgrade to F.. And VA domestically and upgrade to J.. Has worked well the last few years but I probably paid more attention also..

I value 120k QFF at at least $3000.

70SC can easily be earned for $700 exMEL

No brainer.

Thanks Serfty.. I did think it was a little rich... in fact Mr Up and I thought about running away to Hamilton Island...
Really appreciate you doing the maths for me...
I think I will try begging then just buy a flight to get me the SCs.. way better value than the 120,000 points :)

As a data point, AKL-MEL in J can be had for $872 in J giving you 80SC, 10 more than you need.Granted you'd have to get to AKL first.

But I'm using to illustrate that on a simple 1cent per point basis where 120,000 is worth $1,200, the QF offer is poor value as you could achieve 70SC for less than $1,200.

And if you can stretch 120,000 points to being worth 3k like @serfty it's exceptionally poor value.

Just to give a different point of view -

it appears you fly internationally - and like to upgrade. Maybe WP would give you a slight edge over LTG in that regard. But i suspect seat availability (or lack there of) is a bigger factor there than status.

As far as lounges, well I am jaded and most of the time when departing internationally i just go to the business lounge so I can self-pour a decent bourbon rather than the Flounge singing-and-dancing cooth restaurant experience - so over that.

As Rooflyer said - are you sure you wouldn't get comped anyway with the three-year average thing?

Personally, I would only condier the 120k points offer if I was expecting to do a hell of a lot of Y travel, and NOT have LTG up my sleeve....
