Further to my post last month when I hinted that some changes are coming, I can now give some more details.

The short version

AFF will be moving to a different technical platform on Friday evening. The site will be down from 9pm (AEST) while we do the migration. At this stage I expect us to be back up on Saturday morning – with a brand new look!

Migrating to a new platform is a complex (and stressful!) process which can have unanticipated problems as it is impossible to test some things prior to going live. It's quite possible that there may be some issues when the site returns. So I'm asking for your patience in advance. Be assured that we will be working very hard to resolve any outstanding issues.

The longer version

As many of you are aware, we have used vBulletin since 2003. At that time vBulletin was the best forum software available and it has served us really well over almost 15 years.

But times and technology have changed, and its now time to move to a more modern platform which is better suited to contemporary technology. After an extensive evaluation of options, we selected Xenforo to replace vBulletin.

We’ve spent the last few months preparing, and I believe we are now ready to migrate to the new platform. Migration will take place on Friday evening. As I’m sure you’ll appreciate, this is a large and complex operation and we’ve hired specialists to help with the setup and migration. I’m not 100% sure how long the migration will take (trial runs took over 8 hours!) and then there’s the checking and setup which will take another few hours. I expect the brand new AFF to be up again sometime on Saturday morning.

The site will look quite different (much better, I might add!) and all your posts, Private Messages, Flight Tracker details etc will be moved to the new system. So nothing will be lost!

Things will work a bit differently, but all the features you are used to will be available. One thing that won’t be available initially is the App. But the good news is that the new platform renders beautifully on a small screen, so you don’t actually need an App to use AFF on your phone!

Once migration is complete, I’ll create a new thread for discussion and tips on using the new AFF.
