Wine lovers musings, amusings and news

Just look at the other producers Jackson Family are running in Aus - Yangarra & Hickinbotham - arguably amongst the top producers in McLaren Vale at the moment. I see no reason to fear the Giant Steps acquisition.

Can anyone recommend a hot wine for cellaring?

Yep, good vintages of mid-tier Coonawarra Cabernet would fit the bill nicely. Wynns Black Label has a history of cellaring well, and can be had for well within your budget. Even something like the Leconfield Cab Sav can be had for around $15/btl & usually has the credentials to cellar 10+ years...

Not that I'm aware of. I know they exist as I was able to snap up a 2016 The Standish magnum (another birth year) last time I visited his cellar door. I'll probably shoot him an email closer to release to see whether he's bottling any for the next vintage.

I quietly fear for next year's release - the 2018s are getting more attention than these wines have received in the past (and rightly so...), and there's going to be even less made from the low yielding 2019. 2019 is a birth year for me, so I was quietly hoping to snag a magnum or two alongside...

No more talking about these wines. Don't want any more price rises 😂 😂

Dan Murphy's and Other Wine Deals

Haha, yeah, exactly! I appreciate that wine, being a seasonally fluctuant agricultural business, will almost always have a mismatch between supply and demand, thus facilitating the need for discounting. Very few producers are immune to this, and those that are almost always have a long history...

You'd have to imagine there are consumer law issues around their fantasy RRPs - I mean, what percentage of sales have they actually made at full RRP? Even being generous, you'd have to imagine it's less than 5% - certainly not enough for retailers to be using it as a base for two-price...

Let's not beat around the bush here. The only reason it seems like a great deal is because Grant Burge have heavily inflated their prices, well beyond their standing in the market. When they don't sell at their ludicrous RRP, they get offloaded via Vinomofo / Dan Murphy secret deals. It's an...

I'd agree with JH here. Split a case with some mates via the VM $12.50 deal a while ago - a very ordinary wine. Would've returned if I'd kept the case myself. Certainly not worth it at $20, considering the other options available around that price point.

Vinfanticide of the year award coming your way! 😂😂 I did happen to crack a 2018 Sami Odi Hoffmann the other day, in the name of science of course... drank it over a few days, and it was absolutely stunning by day 3 - the rest were promptly stashed deep into the cellar for at least another 5-8...

First off, Schubert Theorem isn't a blend - at least in the traditional sense - it's 100% shiraz sourced from a single vineyard. Where it gets complex is that individual parcels from this vineyard are fermented & barrelled separately, which are either blended back into the final product or...

Yes, but be prepared to work to their pace. Whilst young, typically you'd want to pop the cork the day before you plan to drink them. Some take longer to open up, e.g. I found the 2016 Relic was reticent & took 48hrs to really turn into something remarkable. The 2017 Lamella I tried recently was...
