I flew out 2 days ago, and the after-security area is a bit of a wasteland. The main duty-free shop is open, and there are a few food and beverage options. From memory, the following were open: Better Burger, Sahara Grill, Peroni Bar, Sumo and 2 or 3 coffee shops.

Transit via AKL is allowed, as long as the transit time is less than 24 hours (and you have to remain airside) - link. Economy seats (OW) available online departing LAX on 12 December for US$2694 (with a 3-hour transit in AKL). Slightly cheaper seats available departing on 15 December.

Consider Air New Zealand via AKL and Japan Airlines via HND
