John, I was originally staying in Kythera from Sunday morning until Thursday morning (4 full days ). The ferry from Neapolis to Diakopti Port in Kythira only runs at 9:00 am every day. This would have meant I would not get to Kythira until Tuesday morning. This way I got 3 full days.

Patience is what I needed . Tried every morning until a few days ago and ended up with Tokyo - Sydney - Brisbane in J. Checked again the next day and this was no longer available. It seems a few seats are released every now and then. Thanks to all for your thoughts.
