Two were expiring this year and one from last year. Since I am yet to get it back (6-8 weeks) I don't know how it will pan out, and it is an interesting question. I doubt that they will go through all this trouble and then just take it back.

Hey there. Emirates, Etihad, Cathy, Thai and Singapore do fly to my destinations. And yes, I can fly to the nearest airport and then get on a train/bus. I do have enough points to cover upgrades and really just want to upgrade the longest leg.

This is a bit misleading from AMEX. From the Golden Circle website: Priority upgrade to the next available best room category, if the reserved room type is not available at check-in This means two completely different things and de-values the benefit considerably, IMO.
