    Which connecting flight?

    Hi everyone,
I'm travelling from KUL to PER, and have booked QF78 departing SIN at 7.45pm. Just wondering which flight is best to take from KUL to PER. I plan to depart around noon time.

    We have a few choices:
    1. SQ/MI - Too expensive
    2. Tiger - Don't want to go there
    3. Jetstar - LCC; Cheapest; Only 1 possible flight a day. If the flight is cancelled, we're stuck.
    4. MH - More expensive; might interline with the QF flight.
    5. AK - LCC; many flights a day, but uses the Low cost terminal at KUL which isn't the best. If my flight is cancelled, not sure if they would put us on the next flight, which would still connect.

I would be getting travel insurance through TID. Tossing up between the last 3 options. Which one would you pick and why? Also if we couldn't make our QF flight because of a cancellation or delay, would they cover for a last minute ticket from KUL to SIN?

    Thanks all

    Hi,
Ive flown this sector many times with AK. Have had no major delay, maybe a half hour to 15 delay tops flying with them. Just allow enough time for connection at terminal 1, which of course is also the same terminal QF use. If you catch the 2.50pm AK flight then thats plenty of time. There is plenty to do airside as well at changi. I just picked up a $10 fare for this very sector. Also you might be interested in knowing that a new terminal KLIA 2 is going to be built to replace the old LCCT with 70 pack bays.
Sorry not sure of the insurance part though.

    We have a few choices:
    1. SQ/MI - Too expensive agree!
    2. Tiger - Don't want to go there Tiger is generally OK for this short sector stand alone, but NOT for transferring - for all sorts of reasons, use of budget Terminal at Changi being a standout
    3. Jetstar - LCC; Cheapest; Only 1 possible flight a day. If the flight is cancelled, we're stuck. agree
    4. MH - More expensive; might interline with the QF flight. how much more? Interlining a good aspect, plus being from main terminal at KL
    5. AK - LCC; many flights a day, but uses the Low cost terminal at KUL which isn't the best. If my flight is cancelled, not sure if they would put us on the next flight, which would still connect. Can you afford Plan B (ie buying most expensive fare on another carrier if things go pear shaped)? If so, I'd go for this one. Did the reverse last year SIN-KUL on AK, transfer to JL with 4 hours, and all went smoothly. But I knew what Plan B was!

I'd go MH if it was at all close in price due to interlining etc making it easier.

    AK would be second choice.

And yes, travel insurance is a must.

Any idea how much Plan B would cost? Would travel insurance cover that or at least part thereof?
    Thanks!

MH flexi fares seem to cost 487 MYR = 170 AUD, so at last minute that's probably what it would cost if seats avail (as long as not at the start (in KUL) or end (in SIN) of long weekend - should be OK), and SQ/MI full economy are 701 MYR = 245 AUD. Chances are you won't need to use, but if something goes drastically wrong, that's the cost if you have to throw away your Air Asia ticket and take one of these carriers at the last minute.

Travel insurance may or may not cover it depending on the reason for the delay, and the T&C in your travel insurance (eg most policies provide cover for having to outlay money for travel to get to special events. Mostly this only covers weddings, funerals, conferences, sporting events, however some policies include "preexisting travel arrangement" in this as well, so it's difficult to tell).

    Re: Which connecting flight?

i would probably travel MH also. 170 AUD not a bargain but doesn't strike me as outrageous for a flexible fare. They have many flights KUL-SIN which is good insurance also if things go pear shaped. And a good carrier with reasonable legroom (or used to be). Two caveats: havent flown this route for a few years, and only flown it MH and SQ.

Our last time on this sector was on the KTMB train, slow but relaxing and you can get off at Woodlands and go straight to the airport. However it arrives too late to safely connect to QF78 tho.

    Cheers skip

Looks like it's AK vs MH now
I was planning to take the 12.35pm AK flight (flights are 1hr).
Later flights that would still connect are 1500 and 1700.

If it was MH, the 1200 flight would be best, with the 1630 and 1730 flight still able to connect.

I think I should be safe either way
