A380 Biz or 747 Biz?

I'm off to the USA next month for work. My choices are as follows:

QF11 (A380) or
QF73 (747) into San Fran

The reason I'm considering QF73 is that this particular flight won't have any F cabin seats. However my understanding is that QF will allow Biz class passengers access into the F cabin assuming based on status. The service in F will simply be Biz but of course the seating will be better.

However it's unknown at this moment whether qantas will actually do this. I would assume that if Biz is not crowded then they'll stick everyone in the one cabin for ease of service.

So should I take my chances on QF73 or just suck it out on the A380?

QF73 is my choice at the moment because if I don't get into F, then I will end up with a skybed anyway.

Whereas the A380 has better biz seating.

I would think that, if you're happy with at least the 747 Skybed, it all turns on what chance you think you have of getting a 3 class aircraft at the time, which is a calculated gamble. At least you have a guaranteed flatbed and the same service on QF11.

I would stay on the QF11. There is no advantage to going on the QF73. If you did get an F seat on the QF73 it will be no different to the skybed on the A380. Also since there is no guarantee that you would get an F seat, if you end up in J, you won't be able to sleep horizontally.

An airline seat is a seat not a bed. Why pay that much money on airfare if you are going to sleep for the majority of the trip? If you travel a lot it is much easier to learn to sleep in an upright position.

I think I qualify for the "if you travel a lot" and I have never been able to sleep upright for more than a few minutes at a time. I never manage to sleep lying on my back and if I do drop off in a sitting position I begin to snore and wake myself (and likley those around me). I sleep much better on my side. Unfortunately I am yet to find an economy seat on which I lie on my side (unless I get a row to myself). I could manage some sleep on my side on the Dreamtime seats though it was not overly comfortable. Skybeds (even the Mk I) I find I am able to sleep.

I expect I am not unique in this aspect. Those who are able and happy to sleep while sitting in an economy seat may not be able to justify to themselves the cost of business class travel. For other people the priorities are different.
