    Bad smell cancels Sydney flight

    19th February 2008, 16:24 WST

A bad smell caused a Sydney-bound Qantas flight to be cancelled, leaving stranded passengers to spend the night in Perth's domestic airport.

A Qantas spokeswoman said flight QF566 to Sydney was cancelled on Monday night because of a "recurring issue of odour detected in the cabin".

"Engineers worked to rectify the problem, but once it was apparent that this would not be possible in the short term, we had no alternative but to cancel the flight," the spokeswoman said.

Accommodation could not be found for all the passengers, the spokeswoman said.

"Passengers were provided with refreshments and everything was done to keep them informed of the situation," the spokeswoman said.

"Accommodation was found for some of our passengers but, unfortunately, we could not secure accommodation for all of our passengers.

"The vast majority of passengers have been re-booked on other services today, and we are working hard to ensure all passengers are re-accommodated today."

Qantas regretted any inconvenience to its passengers, the spokeswoman said.

Angry passengers accused Qantas of leaving them in the dark.

"I felt like refugees, there were no announcements, anything we wanted to know, we had to line up at least an hour for," passenger Rebecca Watson told Ten News.

So much for the "Only LCC's abandon you" mantra spouted by some members after the recent JetStar Sydney debacle..

I would suggest that one difference, although not visible to the pax, would be that Qantas probably tried to get accommodation. Getting accommodation at short notice in Perth these days is a tricky proposition.

I think that the passenger stating that she felt like a refugee is stretching the definition somehow. Cancelling a flight would not be QF's preferred option and getting accomodation Perth at short notice is impossible. Particularly for a jumbo jet load of people.

From the pics, passengers were kept at the gate and given lots of Qantas black blankets.

Hotels were chokkas due to some Perth Arts Festival

I am surprised that Qantas was not able to accommodate everyone although as you say they probably tried where as a LCC would not bother.

This is something I do not understand especially for a city the size of Perth. How many motels within half an hour of the airport and would all of them be booked out? Surely the accommodation provided does not have to be 4-5 star.

You may think that, but having been through the joys of finding someone accommodation in Perth at short notice, it can be surprisingly hard. As the article says, some passengers were found accomodation and some not, presumably those in the QP got the accom.
