Actually, and don't tell anyone , I love Newcastle. The coal port is astonishing, filled with the sort of technology and scale that has to be seen to be believed. The Crowne Plaza is a wonderful hotel and the restaurants along the harbour are reasonably priced and pretty damned fine. I love the old English names of the suburbs too.

Even further OT but dinner in Bacchus is pretty good if anyone's taking up the Crowne Plaza offer.
Short taxi ride or 20 minute walk.

I love Newcastle too. It's a slight obsession - best evidenced by the fact i won the 'citizen of the year award' there a few years back (and i've lived in Melbourne for a decade).
