While chewing through my cold tasteless chicken pasta salad the other night flying MEL ADL I noted that more and more people were getting special meals. Not only that but they looked far tastier. Of the special meals: vegan, lacto-ovo, halal, kosher, diabetic (any more?) which is the best option? Should I change religions? Or is the grass greener on the other side?
I would kill for a hot meal sometimes (Stop Terrorism - Bring Back Hot Meals on Qantas!) but will have to make the best of it in the meantime. Last night coming back from ADL to SYD I refused the meal for the first time that I can remember - yes chicken pasta again but with bow ties not rice pasta this time :P
I would have given my right arm for cold tasteless chicken pasta on QF188 from Sydney to Melbourne two weeks ago. We got a box with a muffin, beverage and chocolate. Was I meant to eat the box?
Being a vegetarian, I dread to ask for veg meals in domestic flights as it is generally a few leaves called salads. So I eat before boarding the plane!!!

I have a LFML (Low Fat) option in my profile and always find that I get a decent piece of chicken, or even a decent cut of steak (in Intl J)...that's when you are on a MEAL flight...otherwise, the SNACK flights are the usual fare (sans chocolate, usually inserted sultana's in their place which I hate).

Stupidly (in hindsight) I ordered diabetic meals (I don't have diabetes but very high insulin), and for some strange reason, I'd always get cooked mushrooms. Didn't matter if it was breakfast, lunch or dinner, I'd open the packet to be confronted with cooked mushrooms. Usually no protein foods in the packs, strangely they consisted of mostly vegetable matter. This was on both domestic and international flights recently. My travelling companions who were "lucky" enough to get scrambled eggs for brekky, both got the runs.
Live and learn.
