Platinum Card Insurance - Anyone have experience with claims?

I am one of those just upgraded from Gold to Platinum M'card.

I am taking my family on a trip to Japan next April. Have booked and paid for return flight tickets using the Gold card. NAB tell me that I am covered by whichever of the Gold and Platinum policies which are more beneficial until May 2011. I am using a different Visa debit card for purchasing products whilst there. New Platinum policy only requires return travel to be 100% booked.

In the past I've always bought insurance. I've had a look through the PDS on the website and it seems to cover what I need.

My question is whether anyone has experience in actually making a claim on a C.C. policy, particularly a NAB card. I guess I am nervous about "something for nothing" but would happily save a few hundred dollars if the policy actually delivers.

    All replies appreciated.

I would also be nervous but like you have no real justification either way. I would suggest that you should read the full PDS to see where you really stand.
    cheers,
    Bill.

My brother has a Platinum NAB and was in Nepal doing the Everest Base Camp trek in Oct this year. He fractured his ankle on the way back down and needed to be airlifted to Kathmandu. We spoke to him via satellite phone whilst he was there and he said he'd spoken with the insurers (via the same sat phone) who had booked in the helicopter and arranged the entire trip out. Only thing he did mention was to make sure you speak to NAB before you go anywhere to ensure the contact details are correct as it took a bit of time to find the right number to call in the end.

Re: Platinum Card Insurance - Anyone have experience with claims?

I spent almost all of 2009 working in Japan, my only insurance was the 1-year travel insurance provided by my CBA Platinum Card.

I made a few claims while I was there - just doctor/specialist visits. I had no real problems - CBA outsource their CC insurance to Zurich (or, at least, they did at that time), so I basically had to deal directly with Zurich. They paid up for everything that I provided a reciept for. No emergencies though. Payment came through within about 2-3 weeks of the claim.

I would definately suggest reading through the PDS - but it seemed to me the main catch was to make sure you properly paid for your transport to/from the overseas destination with your card.

That would make me nervous if I was relying upon it. I'd get that in writing. My understanding of the various insurances that comes with these cards is that the policies generally cease when the card is cancelled by the customer (or upgraded in your case).
