First, thanks to everyone who posts here, the collective knowledge is a great help to all long time lurkers like me.

There is a chance that I may need to travel from WLG to BRU in the next few months, and being a self funded flyer, like a lot of people here I love a bargain and love to fly in classes other than Y where possible.

I have had a bit of a go with Matrix and the cheapest J fare that I can find is about $9k (NZD) return utilising mostly Finnair. This doesn't seem like a terrible price by any means, but if at all possible I would like to work out a way to do it for less, but am unsure quite how to research it properly.

One thought I had was to take the longer legs in J and the shorter legs in Y or W (where available). Maximising SC's would be a great bonus (am currently QF SG) but I don't want to take four days to get there in either direction either if at all possible.

Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas for me to try? Thanks in advance for any help

Hi this might seem like an easy question but I was not sure where to post it.

A family member is flying QF to the USA soon, booked in Y through a travel agent (discounted ticket). I am thinking of surprising her by using $ to pay for the difference to W, or if a decent sale comes up, J as a birthday gift. Has anyone had any experience calling QF and doing this? Is it easy or difficult to achieve?

Thanks in advance

The disturbing thing about this is that the overwing exits were used, where the fire was, and the delays caused by people carrying and passing to others, hand luggage. I gather this is a scary regular occurrence in emergency evacuations.

I was disappointed after a number of issues before and during the flight. Below is what I sent through to the Customer Care feedback last night, and I'm interested to know if my concerns are reasonable! Thanks, Cameron.

Quote:

Hello. I just flew on QF 29 from Melbourne to Hong Kong today, and this was my first flight in Business with Qantas. I was rather looking forward to it from the moment the upgrade came through. I feel however I must provide some feedback as I found the experience underwhelming and a little disappointing. There were five issues I had. Taken individually, I would consider each one a minor problem, but experiencing them all in the one flight contributed to the overall feeling of disappointment.

The first issue was boarding. According to International Business Class | Qantas I should have expected a dedicated Premium Boarding lane that I could have used during boarding. There did not appear to be one, so I lined up with everyone else -- which I didn't mind too much, as it was only 5 minutes or so waiting in line, but it is an advertised benefit of International Business Class. (I see on that page that Express Path Immigration is also mentioned. Is that something I should have been entitled too as well? I didn't receive the Express Path card when checking in.)

Second, once I was on board and sitting down, I did not get offered a pre-departure drink. I did see others with their juices and champagnes, and thought someone would eventually come around to me to ask if I wanted one, but apparently not. It being my first Business class flight, I did not want to speak out of turn or seem impatient, so I didn't say anything at the time.

The third issue -- and this is perhaps the most minor of them -- was the fact that the butter that came with our delicious bread for lunch was very cold and basically unspreadable. It really wasn't feasible to spread the butter on the bread, although I did try slicing the butter and putting chunks on it. A bit awkward. The cutlery too was quite cold, as if they had been refrigerated, which just made it a bit unpleasant to hold.

The fourth issue was with the main meal itself. I had ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwich. The sandwich came out quite a bit later than all of the other main dishes that others had ordered. No matter, that was apologised for. But I found when eating it that while most of the schnitzel was hot, there were parts of it that were still cool. Oh well, I had eaten most of it by that stage anyway, so I didn't say anything.

Finally, the most impactful issue, was the fact that the power outlets did not work for me. I was very much looking forward to getting a bunch of work done during the flight, but the power outlets at my seat did not work, even after a reset of the seat. I tried plugging my laptop into another (spare) seat's outlet which did have the green light on, but this just seemed to overload it and it turned off. In the end, I was only able to get a couple of hours work done before my laptop's battery was out. I should point out that the cabin crew were friendly and tried their best to get the power working for me, but to no avail.

So as you can see, these issues all added up to my feeling unimpressed with Business class, and it has left me wondering whether it was a good use of my 40,000 points at all. Thanks for reading, and I hope this feedback is useful.

Dear Forum members,

I would like advise if I am able to claim Qantas Freq points for flights I have undertaken with Malaysia Airlines MEL-KUL and KUL-DEL in Economy (N) Class in December 2012. I have not claimed those points on my MH Enrich account so I wanted to know if I can claim those points on my Qantas account now as Enrich is now part of One World alliance but in Dec 2012 MH were not part of One World alliance. Qantas website states retro claims can be submitted for flights taken within 12 month of travel.

Appreciate some advise on this,

thank you

I don't believe this route is a 'Book the cook' route, but i've heard their signature satay is good..

Just wondering what your experiences are with receiving points from a Virgin Atlantic flight?

I flew to the UK with my family in March and received the outbound points within four days (including the pooled points from my family members).

However, 6 weeks later and still no points for the return flight. I did a retro claim after two weeks but still waiting.

All very frustrating as I would have hit platinum with these status credits...and instead am taking my regular internal flights and creeping towards platinum at 10 SCs a flight!

Just wondering whether others have had similar problems?

I made a switch to fly aboard Virgin Australia last year after a status match, and I've been extremely glad I did. The Virgin Australia A330-200 Coast to Coast service is truly superb.

There are two types of VA A330-200's - two older aircraft which once belonged to Emirates (I am told one of these has recently left the fleet) and the rest are new builds. Flying in the Business Class cabin, I've always been lucky enough to get the new aircraft until this service where I got to experience the ex-Emirates aircraft (I'd flown it once before in Economy back when Qantas grounded their fleet).

The route was PER - MEL.
The date was 13/05/13.
The aircraft was VH-XFA (ex F-WWKB A6-EAB) "Cottesloe Beach".
The seat was 3B.

I spent about an hour in the Virgin Australia lounge, which is in the same spot that the old Ansett Golden Wing Lounge was, except it's been expanded and upgraded. The lounge is pleasant and has a 24 hour barista so I had a coffee. Boarding was about 40 minutes before the flight and I made my way to the aircraft.

On boarding, the cabin crew escort you to your seat (in Business Class) and a short while later the flight attendant looking after the seat I was in introduced herself and brought me a comfort pack (international standard with eye mask, socks, tooth bush, tooth paste, deodorant and a pen). This is followed by a printed menu, as well as a printed wine list.

This was my seat 3B, The old style recliner must have been top of the line when it was introduced into Emirates service, there were so many choices. The seat was comfortable upright, but in the recline mode it was hard to find a comfortable configuration, but it was better than a standard recliner (not as good as the new aircraft though):

Size: 31.9 KB">ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1368894615.421108.jpg

I checked out the Virgin Australia Voyeur magazine - the fleet is certainly much larger than it was a few years ago. Virgin Australia recently acquired Skywest so added Fokker 50, Fokker 100 and A320's to the fold - switch the 777 and A330 with 767's and it kind of reminds me of the old Ansett Australia fleet!

Here's a shot of the cabin once the mood lighting was turned on:

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1368894557.721126.jpg

After take off, the chief cabin steward brought me a Galaxy Tablet as the ex-Emirates aircraft only have a loop entertainment system. By now I had moved across to 3A and used the tray table next to me to watch some movies:

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1368894540.704467.jpg

After hot towels, the cabin crew offer a drinks service. I had a Fat Yak beer (highly recommended) and they bring out warmed nuts in a ceramic bowl.

The menu was pretty impressive, with several options for entrée, three main options and sweets. For entrée I had the wild mushroom soup which comes with bread. Rather than just butter, Virgin Australia offer olive oil and dukha:

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1368894425.183941.jpg

The lamb shanks came highly recommended. Other mains options included a chicken dish, fish, and a vegetarian option:

ImageUploadedByAustFreqFly1368894406.600550.jpg

And for sweets, a delicious caramel white chocolate cheese cake - wow!

So, I guess all that was left was time to sit back, relax and enjoy the Virgin Australia service.

Other observations:
- The cabin crew are an absolute delight on every Virgin service - I've never had a grumpy onboard flight attendant.
- There is a bottle of natural mineral water at every seat.
- The seats are embossed with the Virgin logo.
- There Galaxy tablets come with iPad style headphones rather than sound-cancelling ones used on the newer aircraft.
- Bathrooms - there's one at the front and one at the rear of the business cabin for exclusive use of business class passengers.
- The A330 is quiet! Especially up the front here, but the RR engines really do make a glorious noise on take off!
- Cabins was quite empty, 6 seats occupied - though Economy looked full.

Looking very much forward to the next Virgin flight in a few weeks time. Will post something of the newer A330's when time permits.

Some colleagues of mine had an interesting experience at MEL today. As they were waiting to board a VA flight for CBR (I got stuck with taking care of our Melbourne gig), they were paged and told to report that baggage claim as there was an issue with one of their bags.

So when they got there, five AFP officers were waiting and they were told to follow along an interesting path through the baggage handling areas to a small AFP area within. They were told that the bag in question had been detected by a dog as containing "explosives or munitions". He instinctively laughed on hearing that - on reflection he said that the Feds may not have thought it so amusing!

The bag actually contained some video equipment, including microphones, cables, and a radio mic receiver. You can imagine how this combination would've looked on an X-ray!!

They had to take everything out and after doing so the AFP were satisfied that all was well. They were sent on their way and told to hurry as the flight was waiting for them. They made it to Canberra with all the gear, though a little late (crew announcement explaining the delay on approach to CBR was apparently amusing, putting it down to "a baggage discrepancy".

The interesting thing is that there would be no reason for the bag to be detected. Neither the bag nor anything in it has had anything to do with explosives - ever. Kinda weird. So we figure there might be a pooch going hungry tonight!

Was all quite an interesting event, and I'm kinda disappointed I wasn't there to see it. But I'm curious to know if anyone else has had similar experiences?

--

As a Platinum with Qantas I've flown on my fair share of 767's and over the years have wondered and wondered why they had not upgraded them.

Well, finally they have, and now for the first time I've flown on one! It makes a big difference.

I had a relaxing hour at the Qantas Club (Business Lounge) - though it was very hard to find a seat as the space is too small for the number of people using the lounge in Melbourne.

There was no boarding call made in the Business Lounge for this service, though "Boarding" and then "Final Call" flashed on the screens; so I made my way to the gate which was at the far end of the terminal.

The service was QF773 from MEL to PER.
The aircraft was VH-OGI "City of Port Augusta".
The date was 14/05/13.
Seat 5B in the Business cabin.

The first hint that this aircraft was an upgraded aircraft was the "Q-Streaming" logo stuck near the front door. This was a 767-338ER (as I understand it the -336's are not being updated) and it was great to be getting an upgraded aircraft for the long flight to Perth.

On boarding, you notice a significant difference from the usual Qantas 767 experience.

The new cabin looks fresh and clean, and takes at least a decade off the appearance of these aircraft. Changes include new curtains, painted walls and bulkheads, refreshed chairs, new carpets and all the lighting appeared to be working well so the aircraft looked bright and airy. And as row 5 is the last row of the Business Class cabin, I grabbed a sneak of the fancy new Economy class.

The updated chairs are far more comfortable than they were before. The last few services I've had on aircraft that weren't upgraded the chairs were flimsy with poor back support and broken head rests.

This time, all the seats appeared to work well on this aircraft and mine was very comfortable. The new coverings have a lot more padding than the old seats and this was far more comfortable.

After take off the cabin crew explained how to use the iPad's (Q-Streaming) which attach to the back of the seat in-front of you (unless you're unlucky enough to be in Row 1 or Row 23 where it has to sit on your tray table).

My iPad had a low battery so a new one was provided. The movie choice was rather lackluster, with one new release and a number of 3-6 month old films (eg: Sapphires which was showing on the A380 back in September 2012). But it was a huge improvement on the old "Main Screen". There was also around 20-30 TV choices, and the news, as well as music channels.

The "main screens" at the front of the cabin aired the welcome program, then the route map. At tip of descent a 30 min comedy is shown as the iPads have to be turned off. At the front of the cabin, the center screen (and the big projectors which Qantas 767 regulars will remember) are gone, replaced by a stylized version of the Qantas logo which looked very classy. Welcome to the 21st century!

We were offered a dinner service on the flight. We were given the old style tray service which Qantas says they will do away with on the transcontinental service, as it moves to compete more evenly with the (epic) Virgin Australia Coast to Coast A330 J service.

A beer and some pretzels was served first, followed by one choice of entrée - which was poached trout, feta cheese and mushy peas.

Mains offered more choices. Lamb chops, Chicken Salad or Snapper. I went with the Lamb which was served with Israeli Couscous and broccoli.

The lamb was rather dry but it was alright. For sweets I had the Maggie Beer Dark Chocolate and Orange ice cream and a coffee. It's the first Maggie Beer ice cream flavor I'd ever want again - so that was a pleasant surprise!

Other observations I made include:
- Foot rests work better now,
- The lumbar support controls have all been refurbished / mended so they work well,
- Bathrooms aboard haven't been updated and still sport the old blue walls,
- iPads come with iPad style hearphones rather than the sound-cancelling headphones, so I used my own as the 767's GE engines were quite noisy (lovely noise but not so great when trying to watch a film).

We had a smooth flight. When the captain / copilot made announcements it came over the Q-streaming devices too and soon we were on our descent into Perth. It was the smoothest landing I can remember.
