Our member Limewood is planning some domestic travel in the US and is considering using Qantas points to book American Airlines domestic flights.

AFF Community Insight is that it is generally better value to purchase domestic US travel with cash
it's a waste to use QF FF points for AA domestic flights when most flights within the States even trans continental flights are USD100.00 to USD150.00.
It is best to compare fares and then book directly with the airline which is the cheapest.
I would check out www.priceline.com for fares for all those sectors then it will show you which airline is the cheapest. I would then go to the website of that particular airline & book it direct with them.
This proved to be sound advise: instead of spending $2,000 as quoted on the AA website, our member managed to purchase the fares for significantly less – and saved his points for the proverbial 'rainy day'.
Yeah not worth using points I see now, can do this trip for a mere $600 each.

A member describes how he and his wife were 'bumped off business' on a recent frequent flyer ticket to Singapore.
we rocked up at Perth airport, 2.5 hours out, plenty of time to enjoy the Q Lounge. Checking in, "there is a problem, let me get my Supervisor". Supervisor rocks up after 10 minutes. "Sorry we have overbooked, you have been randomly selected to be moved to Economy"
We will discus the level of compensation a bit later - this topic did raise a number of other issues: Our members wonder how common this practice is
is being bumped from J to Y a regular occurrence? I know that I shouldn't be worried, but I have paid fare for my +1 in J and have a J classic seat award for myself next year to Tokyo (for 10 year wedding anniversary) and would hate for this to occur!
Fortunately, our members believe it is not that common.
Not common, so no need to worry. Besides, they're very unlikely to split up a travelling couple.
Some members believe that tickets purchased with points (as in the case of our original poster) have a higher chance of being 'bumped' when compared to tickets purchased with cash.
better to upset a person who has a classic award booking than someone who has forked over actual money for the fare.
Going back to the issue of compensation: Our member did well. He
got the $200 - as duty free goods that I selected. And compensation cash of $982. And 50000 points back.
You can use this as a benchmark if it ever happens to you! As another member puts it
So next time, might book Business and hope for bumping again.
