A member is travelling to Hong Kong with her husband and their baby in January. She wonders if they run the risk of being “bumped” as it is peak season and they did purchase the ticket with frequent flyer points.

Generally our members believe there is little chance of being bumped off that flight. Firstly, using frequent flyer points to book the ticket doesn’t disadvantage you.
My understanding is that once you have secured your flight with points QF don't treat you any differently than someone who has paid with cash for their flights ie you have no more chance of getting bumped than anyone else does.
Qantas are usually pretty good at yield management
Not to say it never happens, but QF are very good with load management, and I don't think they engage in overselling to the same degree as their US counterparts.
Some of our members believe that travelling with a child will reduce your chances of being bumped.
I assume you have (or will) put in a request for a bassinet seat, which should normally mean you get a seat allocation fairly early in the process. Having a seat allocation in the system is most likely an indicator of your 'likelihood of flying' - i.e. whether you're going to show up and take the flight. If I was doing yield management and had to find people to bump off an oversold flight I'd be looking first at those who had not allocated a seat at that time before turning to people with allocated / checked-in seating.
And to further reduce the chances, our members suggest checking in early – perhaps even the day before, and then arriving at the airport early. Once your luggage is checked in and you have your boarding pass, there is very little chance of being bumped.

    Frequent Flyer Comedy

Booking a Qantas Any Seat Award (ASA) has obvious advantages in terms of status credits and points earned. But they can cost a ton of points to purchase!

This week thanks to the handy computer skills of markis10, members are guided through a screen-by-screen display on how to snag an Any Seat Award using minimum points plus cash. Instead of paying tons of points, you can reduce the points cost down from 100% points to minimum points plus a cash component.

The minimum points cost is identical to a classic award redemption. The cash component will represent either the taxes/fees/surcharges levied or potentially a "supplement" which is due to the fare bucket of the seat which you are purchasing.

By making a booking in this way, flyers will receive both points and status on the entire fare, not just on the cash-component of the fare!

Thank you markis10 for a great post and helping our members along in their quest for platinum status.
