    Australian Travel Evolution

Ten years ago you couldn’t fly non-stop to Darwin. You would consider $350 for a return fare from Melbourne to Sydney an absolute bargain. You had two choices when booking your flights: Qantas or Ansett and you could only fly to Alice Springs on Fridays…. How times have changed!

Today the domestic travel market is ultra-competitive, ever-changing and plays host to a huge variety of fares at bargain basement prices. The past decade has changed the domestic travel market in extreme ways which overall have benefitted flyers.

New routes are cropping up at a phenomenal rate. You can now fly direct to Darwin, Broome, Coffs Harbour and Kalgoorlie amongst others.

Gone are the days when some flights only went once per week. Ten years ago there was only one opportunity to fly to Alice Springs per week, now there are ten! The frequency of flights means passengers have greater choice and flexibility when choosing when and where to fly.

The price of domestic travel has also decreased dramatically with the birth of the low cost-carrier. The rise and rise of Virgin, Jetstar, Tiger and the like are making domestic travel more competitive than ever. One member recalls that in the mid-1990’s they purchased a Syd-Adl airfare for $272 and this was considered an absolute bargain. Compare that with today’s fares and you’ll see how times have changed.

    3. Getting Upgraded

One of our members, philflyer, is planning a return trip from Sydney to Buenos Aires. Travelling on the more comfortable seat on such a long flight has its advantages! On a previous trip he recalls being able to “upgrade” to a Premium Economy seat, simply by calling Qantas a few days before the flight. But this time it seems as though the Premium seats are blocked.

Another member, wrldtrvllr, has a similar experience:
I'm also doing same flights SYD-EZE vv but a month earlier. I managed to snag some prem econ seats online via the seat request function. But it may also be "blocked" to certain status levels. I'm back to Gold, but can't recall if I did the seat requests before my qualification period expired (was WP) or not.
It seems as though Qantas do allow allocation to these seats to their frequent flyers with “Status” a few days prior to the flights departure:
Well I received my answer this morning. I had put a Seat Notification in Expert Flyer on the Prem Economy seats on QF17 for this Saturday. These seats were opened up to silver status economy flyers last night. So it appears that they are being made available 3 days prior to the flight
Bottom line: If you wish to travel in a Premium Status seat and have Qantas status, consider purchasing the cheaper Economy seat and then requesting a seat re-allocation, a few days before departure.
