One brave member this month questions the 'value' of business class travel. Business class long-haul flights can cost up to three times more than economy and our member cannot fathom why someone would willingly pay such a larger financial outlay to arrive at the same destination as their economy counter-parts.

The question causes quite a stir and divides our members into a number of different camps. There are those who will not compromise on the luxury and legroom afforded to business class passengers. There are those who travel business when the deal (and the finances) are right and then there are others who will happily endure a sleepless night in economy class in order to save the extra cash.

One member Skyring sees travel as a hobby and the journey, as they say, is just as important as the destination. Therefore spending the extra money only enhances the experience.

The added intangibles are not to be underestimated either. Flying business class is a sure-fire way to efficiently and effectively earn yourself points and status.

For the time-poor travellers business class travel can also shave hours, if not days off your trip. You save at least an hour each way due to speedier check-in and immigration queues. Many of our members report that flying business saves them a day each way in jetlag.

But some of our economy class travellers are still not sold on the idea. Some members would prefer to spend the extra cash on a nicer hotel or partake in some extensive duty-free shopping.

The value of Business versus Economy is in all about perception and priorities.

Our new member, Buck Naked is planning a family trip of a lifetime next year. The family of 5 are looking at a Round The World trip and are seeking the “best and most honest” advice from our members. In particular, Buck Naked asks
What do you (the experts) think is the best way to book an around the world trip – yourselves via the Qantas/One World site for example, via a travel agency or do it by booking each flight yourself around the world ?

We are definitely doing this next year, but I’m also unsure as to when I should start booking it – do you think I should do that now or is there a better time in the year to book a trip like this that may allow us to get access to any specials ? At this stage we are looking to travel about this time next year (July).
As usual, our members are quick to help out and unselfishly share their knowledge. Some useful insights include:
If the prices are relatively the same then I would book a RTW via the QF / Oneworld planner rather than all the flights separately. The reason for this is to get all your flights included in a single PNR. Basically this means you will be assisted by the airline if something goes wrong like a flight is cancelled or if there are delays etc.
Given the strength of the AUD, I was thinking you could possibly look at buying this in New Zealand (start your trip in AKL). I was playing around the QF RTW calculator and remembered that flights ex. AKL where much cheaper than ex AUS
If you aren't completely set on some of the cities it may help- Dubai and Hawaii may limit you more than London and New York for instance so keep an open mind for substitutions. Maybe a Pacific island instead of Hawaii, Singapore instead of Dubai etc.
