A new member (and an inexperienced traveller) is wondering what is the best way to spend 9 hours at LAX during a stop over from Sydney to Boston.
In addition to providing advice about clearing customs and checking in luggage for the Boston leg, our members were unanimous in advising
against catching a cap to LA
Catch a cab into LA? Have you been to LA before? I think you will want a very clear idea of what you are looking to achieve, see or do well in advance. Catching a cab into LA is not the same as catching a cab into Sydney or San Francisco
A better option would be to cab to Santa Monica and then spending some time walking from Santa Monica down to Venice Beach. You can hire a bike:
There is bike hire at three main hotels in Marina Del Rey and also at Venice Beach. I paid $8 for an hour to wake up my legs at Venice and the ride either way is very nice
Other suggestions include:
- Taking a recovery nap at an airport hotel
- Visiting the warbird museum just east of LAX
- Visit Long Beach and have a look at the original Queen Mary which is now a floating hotel.
- Or shopping (this is the US after all!)
catch a taxi up to Costco up about 5 miles east on West Century after putting your bags thru the suggested process. You can become a Costco member very quickly but there is a fee to join

Re: Qantas BNE/SYD/MEL - LAX $850
I just did a dummy booking for Sept 12. 2 people SYD/LAX return 1823 euro = 2300 AUD. The same flights on Qantas were $3700.
