Our members this week engage in a little friendly cross-fire to determine which airline is best for frequent travel in Australia. Our members traditionally fall within two camps: Qantas lovers and Qantas haters. A growing number of our members, however, now sit somewhere in that grey, fuzzy area in-between.

Some members feel that with Qantas travel you pay more and get less. The flights are usually more expensive, the frequent flyer program has some major flaws and Qantas appear to rely heavily upon consumer loyalty rather than providing an efficient, top-class service.

Many of our members refute the suggestion that Qantas does not offer value for money. One member states that in their experience the average cost of flying Qantas domestically in comparison to Virgin Blue only works out to be an $8.30 difference. A difference which our members feel is well worth its weight in lounge access, food and drink. In light of these figures many members feel that despite the growing number of carriers, they simply do not stack up in service or comfort and therefore the higher price ticket on Qantas is a justified necessity.

Further the frequent flyer program for frequent domestic travellers has a relatively high return rate and it has all the ‘trimmings’ one craves from an airline including an extensive network of lounges as well as perks for the high status flyer such as operational upgrades and seat choices.

Overall there is no winner in this debate, the best airline for travel in Australia can be determined only on the individuals’ perception of ‘value’.

    USA Vacation

Our members love a challenge. So when newbie Graeme gave them his wish-list and budget constraints for a US adventure, they were quick to assist.

Two People, a wish-list of Hawaii, LA, San Francisco and New York, one passenger with 93,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points and the other with 50,000 and a budget of $1,500 for flights and transport was the challenge… and as always our members rose to it !

The first obstacle was how to get the most out of the frequent flyer points. The general consensus seemed to be to pool the points, purchase an award return economy ticket and then purchase a second ticket outright. The two tickets could then be linked. Virgin Australia is also an alternative option. Their fares are (usually) cheaper than Qantas. However the lure of accumulating Qantas points may detract from this option for our newbie.

The second obstacle was to work out the best way to travel once in the US. Many members recommended the legendary American road-trip and touted the LA to San Francisco drive as one of the world’s greatest. The New York bus service and subway were also recommended for their ease of use and efficiency. The super shuttle for airport transport was also recommended as relatively hassle-free.

Many members suggested that three weeks was not long enough to do justice to all four locations and suggested that New York or Hawaii be dropped from the itinerary.

Good Luck Graeme, we look forward to the trip report!
