Our members provide anecdotal evidence that airlines certainly do profile their passengers. For example, a member got an upgrade on an American Airlines flight at the expense of another passenger with a higher priority. When asked why this happened, the flight attendant responded
every time he contacts us it is a complaint but you give us praise. You were always going to get the upgrade.
This does raise an important issue in that it discourages complaints
Guess it'd have to be done anonymously, or as a veiled threat to use competitors for bad service.
There is also evidence that Qantas profile their passengers: a member posts how a Qantas flight attendant asked him specific questions related to his occupation
I'm not sure where that piece of information was stored but obviously there's some form of profile information that the cabin crew have access to in regards to who's on board their flight.

    3. Freq Fly Programs

As most frequent flyers know, there are effectively 2 frequent flyer currencies: Frequent flyer points and status credits. And as our informed members know only too well, the currency that counts is not frequent flyer points, but rather status credits! Sure, you need points to transact, but it is status credits that give real value (and incidentally, increase your point earning capacity).

Status credit can only be earned by flying. Our new member turffy feels this is unfair
If we play the game, change our credit card, hire brand X car, stay at this hotel etc and build up our points to allow us to travel using them then I believe we are entitled to earn SC for the loyalty we have shown to the FF brand (not just the airline)
    In general, our members disagree
If we earned SCs just from shopping we'd all be WP1 and that would make the status levels worthless. You'd quickly start complaining that the Flounge is always full of "woolies w___". So by forcing you to fly and earn your SCs the airlines are maintaining the exclusivity of the elite levels.
But importantly, there IS A WAY to converts points to status credits on the Qantas FF program
You know you can earn status by using a xASA on Qantas from the points you've earned from shopping.
(There is a detailed discussion on how to do this HERE.)
