As most frequent flyers know, there are effectively 2 frequent flyer currencies: Frequent flyer points and status credits. And as our informed members know only too well, the currency that counts is not frequent flyer points, but rather status credits! Sure, you need points to transact, but it is status credits that give real value (and incidentally, increase your point earning capacity).
Status credit can only be earned by flying. Our new member
turffy feels this is unfair
If we play the game, change our credit card, hire brand X car, stay at this hotel etc and build up our points to allow us to travel using them then I believe we are entitled to earn SC for the loyalty we have shown to the FF brand (not just the airline)
In general, our members disagree
If we earned SCs just from shopping we'd all be WP1 and that would make the status levels worthless. You'd quickly start complaining that the Flounge is always full of "woolies w___". So by forcing you to fly and earn your SCs the airlines are maintaining the exclusivity of the elite levels.
But importantly, there IS A WAY to converts points to status credits on the Qantas FF program
You know you can earn status by using a xASA on Qantas from the points you've earned from shopping.
(There is a detailed discussion on how to do this
HERE.)

Re: Qantas BNE/SYD/MEL - LAX $850
I just did a dummy booking for Sept 12. 2 people SYD/LAX return 1823 euro = 2300 AUD. The same flights on Qantas were $3700.
