A number of our lucky members lunched at Neil Perry’s restaurant ‘Rockpool’ with the CEO of Qantas Frequent Flyer Simon Hickey and head of airline loyalty Steph Tully. The lucky diners were the winners of a Qantas competition which was promoted on our website. The recipients of an invite to this event had succeeded on the basis of their submission of questions to the CEO and head of loyalty. As we all know, our members are never short of frequent flying questions and this was their moment to shine!

Our chosen members were all aflutter with many posting live feeds from the event itself and utilising other social networking media to keep us informed of the gossip when and as it happened!

Many of you will recall that in June 2011 Virgin invited five of our AFF members to lunch with a similar competition. This was a unique marketing opportunity to announce some of the new Velocity membership perks to a market with an active interest in their product. Qantas followed suit in September and upped the ante by offering the reward to more members.

The Qantas competition generated a huge response from our members and it would appear our members did us proud by putting both Simon Hickey and Steph Tully through a rather rigorous grilling!

The post-event conversation has been very enlightening- click HERE for the full low-down.

One member this week asks our knowledgeable crew for suggestions on the best Frequent Flyer program for annual flights between Sydney and London.

Like all things Frequent Flyer, the answer is not always black and white. Our members identify two issues that first need to be clarified. First, it depends on what airline our member is likely to actually fly on and second, the value of the points obtained for the individual must be considered.

One member suggests that by continuing to buy flights on the same basis that the member has in the past (i.e. cheapest available) does not necessary disentitle them from racking up some frequent flyer points. For Example: flying Etihad on a cheap deal and crediting the points to Virgin Australia could score our member some free domestic travel.

The appropriate program will also depend on whether our member intends on earning points in other ways such as via a credit card or other domestic or international travel.

Our members make some useful and insightful suggestions. Point-earning capacity versus intended redemptions will determine the value of joining a loyalty program.
