Consumer confidence in the Airbus A380 has been adversely affected after engineers report cracks in the wings. Internationally, sixty-seven of the Airbuses are in use and both the airlines and Airbus have admitted to discovering the cracks. Qantas have a total of twenty of the aircrafts on order and have already received ten which are currently in use. Qantas have admitted that "miniscule" cracks have been discovered but they maintain that the cracks represent no risk to air safety.
Our members are divided on the issue. Some members feel that the planes must be safe as there has been no intervention by any civil aviation authorities. Other members have indulged in a little conspiracy theory and believe some of the press is a result of union "scare-mongering".
Other members prefer their aircraft to be un-cracked and are concerned about the severely of the damage. The ongoing concern is if such "stress-cracking" has developed so early on- what are the other potential problems and/or design faults which are yet to be seen?
However, whilst our members are concerned, so far it has not deterred them from flying on the A380's and at this stage they are happy to follow the directives of both Airbus and the carriers.
