Are those prices one way or return?
edit: Found the answer myself. They are one way.

What's their J class like?
Maybe use JQ's Price Beat Guarantee? Makes MEL-HNL return at $698 less 10%. If I wasn't doing a quick RTW in Feb/Mar 12 I would definitely have booked something.
I've never understood Australia's fascination with Hawaii. It's by far JQ's most expensive route and although the Aussie dollar is high I never understood why someone would fly 10+ hours, bypassing/flying over stunning cheap beach holiday destinations like Thailand, Phillippines, Samoa and Fiji to go to a diluted US outpost?
I thoroughly enjoy Hawaii, been there four times and itching to go back. I've been to the Phillipines twice, Fiji once but not yet been to Samoa and even though they all have their pro's and con's ...... sitting on a pink beach chair at the Royal Hawaiian, sipping on a mai tai, watching the people stroll by and seeing the gentle waves roll in. That's more than enough for me.
Yes Hawaii is pricey but at least I won't get hussled like in the Phillipines or Thailand (mind you I also enjoy Thailand very much and consider Bangkok as one of the top cities of this world ie. think all the rooftop bars).
Personally I have no interest in places like Bali, Thailand or The Phillipines...Asian destinations just don't do it for me (apart from Singapore, which I love, but it is more "civilised", for want of a better word). Hawaii, however, is different and it does interest me. Different strokes for different folks, as they say. Don't think I will be able to take advantage of these prices this time around though. Pity.
