Two hours with a CL bag tag

I had an interest flight last night, SYD-ADL. I made the big push and got the 17:25 flight, which is way early for me to leave work, an early start to my europe trip next week. I boarded up front, there was no priority boarding (just mention that to continue a theme), more like the ground team member said to the flight team members "just start boarding them and while I get clearance".

Anyway, I had 4F on a 73H. I get to row 4 and start to organise my crap. When this dude turns up and says to one in particular, "Oh your taking that one". he puts his bag in the overhead above row 5 and that's when I notice the black NGCI bag tag. Needless to say, I got my stuff put away quickly, and jumped into my seat. I thought it was jolly decent of this guy to let me take the overhead space above row 4. Overall a pretty unassuming guy, but Armani glasses and a rather nice suit.

I sat there for about 45 seconds thinking great, CL and WP - we gotta have an empty middle seat. As I was enjoying this thought, the CL is getting up and some dude gets into the middle seat. Doh! He seemed alright, but he put is boarding pass facing out in the seat pocket. slightly DYKWIA.

After we get airborne it seems like he is looking at me a bit. I was in civvies having changed in the QP. He also starting waving around his boarding pass at one point., turns out he was a PS. Anyway, it was a bit strange. I'm sure he was wondering who I was to be sitting in 4F.

Nice flight anyway, especially to be in such close proximity to a CL bag tag owner.
karens and Voyages like this.

I don't know whether this dude may have been on a high yield fare that allowed him to choose the seat. It never ceases to amaze me that people who have a seat like 6D or 7A will move themselves into 4B or 4E if the opportunity presents itself.

Even if you quiz them & ask them if they're aware they've moved themselves into a middle seat they almost always say "yes I know but it's in the first row" & have an expression on their face like they've just won lotto.

Guess it's a case of he who sits closest to the front wins. I've sat in 4F before thinking 4E was going to remain vacant only to have a guy sit there at the last minute quite pleased with himself as row 4 had more leg room.

The only other reason a lowly PS might be in row 4 is if he was 'force transferred' onto the flight ie on a non-changeable fare but for operation reasons eg weather, flight cancellation or aircraft u/s type scenario. Force transferring will override the theoretical seating suitability - eek.

I must sayi have trouble deciding what is a good seat on the 737-800. I think I rate 4A/F over 4C/D because a proper bag will fit under the seat in front for the window seats. I used go for 4B/E but I've convinced myself that row 5 or 6 aisle seats are much better.

I'd love to get a forced move to row 4, the best I've had is about row 12.

I’ve sat next to several CL members now, and even talked to a few (after a few too many)

CL members are human like anyone else. I was on a recent flight DRW/BNE & SO & myself had seats 1F & 1J which we were more than happy with however the CL in 1K detected we were a couple & insisted we sit together. I seriously didn't mind where I sat but it was extremely nice of him in any case to offer.

The flight that day was pretty full & was minus 12 in Y so they would have had to do at least 12 op ups which I think he might have been. Perhaps he preferred an aisle as I know sometimes when op ups happen you just get any seat in J, not necessarily what your preference is.

He looked kind of familiar as I'd seen his photo somewhere & it dawned on me later on that he's an NT Copper married to the the new leader of the CLP & Federal Member for Solomon.

Having 2 CL business friends makes it easy to tell you that they are normals. They even offered to get me into CL but I figure I would need to start buying tickets but that would spoil The Game.
They are now envious and would like to be Frequent Flyer Fiends because their business does not pony up First class paid for tickets since the GFC.
Neither of these 2 CLs have their heads up their .... !
Actually if only 25% of the population are abnormals you would reduce the risk of meeting one by taking a window seat.
If you are still doing the aisle seat you do double your chances.
