My top 5 things to do in TL

I visited Timor Leste earlier this year and have produced my top five things to do in Dili.

5. Try to use Vodafone global roaming. Then ask every Aussie you meet which phone company they are with. Then try to use a Timor mobile. Give up and walk to the person you were trying to talk to. Get to that person and wish you had emailed as you're now sweating.

4. Watch an AFL match. The ground is a rectangle of unmaintained dirt with hints of grass. You might be lucky enough to have a goal post land on your head like I did!

3. Ride a push bike in peak hour. Feel safe in the knowledge that every 5th vehicle seems to belong to the UN or the Aussie Army. Get back to your accommodation and wonder why every 5th vehicle seems to belong to the UN or the Aussie Army.

2. Visit the Jesus statue and if you're feeling energetic, run to the top! Do lots of push ups at the top for no reason other than you can. Run back down. Run halfway up again. Do variations of this whilst admiring the view. If doing this, make sure it is at 6am because it's too hot any other time of the day! There is also a staute of Pope John Paul II however I didn't get out there.

1. Buy the local coffee. Take home and enjoy, thinking about the great time you had in TL.

Wouldn’t you have to declare the coffee and expect it to be confiscated on arrival back in Australia?

The coffee is properly packaged and due to the risk of confiscation I only bought one packet. I declared the coffee and there were no issues with it. I think they're used to seeing the 'Cafe Timor' brand.

Obviously you aren't a Melburnian, as you would have added - Complained that the coffee wasn't as good as Melbourne.

    Andrew - a Melburnian!

Andrew, I think we need to cross the Timorese coffee beans with a Melbourne barista and we would have perfect coffee.
