Amex Ultimate Card- eligible qantas purchase to redeem free flight?

Can anybody please enlighten me on what constitutes an eligible purchase from qantas in order to redeem the free return flight with the Amex Qantas Ultimate card? I do not need to purchase any qantas flights for the next few months but am hoping to book my free return flight soon.

Does buying 500 points for $20 count?

Also, what is availability like when booking the return flight? Is it easy enough to get seats fri/sun night?

I think it's any charge from the Qantas merchant account. so yes buying points or paying a change fee should count.

Re availability, the "free flights" are available when the $112 (Mel-syd) or equivalent flights are on offer. However you can pay the difference in cash to book a flight at a different time.
