Despite the $900 annual fee, this card does seem good, even if you just get it JUST for the 80,000 points offer....

There is an AMEX Platinum "Charge" Card which converts to QFF at 1:1 and an AMEX Platinum Reserve/Edge "Credit" Cards which does not convert to QFF.

I see where your confusion is:
    • LIMITED TIME OFFER: 80,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points22 when you spend $500 on your Card in the first 2 months of Card membership - that's enough for a Qantas return Classic Award flight from Sydney to Singapore23, (60,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer points plus $410.14 in surcharges, fees and taxes), or $800 worth of travel which you can spend with Platinum Travel ...
See this thread: http://www.australianfrequentflyer.c...rve-33380.html (NEW: 25K for Edge, 35K for Reserve 80K for Plat Charge)

That's good to know. There was a bit of eyebrow raising at the do about te $100 spend.

I'm mainly interested in the insurance because after 4 years of work travel I found out the company policy only covers medical expenses (found out the hard way when I left a $350 pair of ray bans on a train in Oslo )

we were told at the AFF do that you had to spend at $100 on the actual card (even the charge card) towards the trip for the insurance to qualify, but that's not what is implied on the website.

As I said at the time, Luisa is wrong. I have the Ts and Cs in front of me. You get travel insurance just by being a Plat charge card holder; don't need to spend anything to qualify!

With the 80K bonus signup points, and free return flight per year it's a no brainer (at least for the first year).

Two questions I have that you might be able to answer:

    1. Do you earn SCs/Points on the free flight?
    2. Do you have to pay for a trip with the card to be covered by the travel insurance? The T&Cs provide a link to a website with the insurance details, but you have to be a registered Amex user to access the site
Shoot me a PM with your email address Andrew, and I will send you the Ts and Cs. edit to add: The Ts and Cs on the website is dated August 2010 which is the one I have in front of me.

That's my understanding that purchases eg to replace lost / delayed bags need to made on the AMEX charge card.
