Survey of Hong Kong lounges - 2 February 2012

Perhaps this should go to a new thread, as it addresses questions and comments from several current threads. Will leave it to a Mod to move it, if that seems appropriate - especially as I lost the first version of this when the iPad battery died. (Apologies if this becomes a double post.)

Arrived at HKG early this morning - so early that not even the transfer gate was open, let alone any lounges. Had four hours plus before a connecting flight, so put the time to use by doing a "lounge crawl".

    QF First:
Signage at the door stated that the opening time was 05.00 am but the door was still locked at 05.15 am. Opened shortly after - but no other customers around. The usual selection of breakfast goods, with some warm snacks included. No changes in evidence, although now it is F only, of course, compared with the shared arrangements a while back.

    CX Wing First:
A shadow of its former self, but still operating. Cabanas were all closed when I was there, although the shower rooms were all available. I've used only the cabanas previously, so don't know if the shower rooms have been looking tired for a while - but they were today. Staff were welcoming and efficient, as always, and Champagne (M&C) was available, regardless of the hour. Food was its usual range and standard.

Renovations have begun and, according to the staff today, are to be completed by the last quarter of 2012.

    CX Wing Business:
Entry is quite separate from the F Lounge - from Level 6, near Gate 2. F is Level 7, above it. The newest part of the J lounge has been open only a day, while another section has been operative for around six months, I understand.

All very swish! If the J facility is any guide, then the new F Lounge will be something to look forward to.

The main lounge area is upstairs from the reception area, including the very smart Noodle Bar, and the Coffee Loft. Showers and IT downstairs. Very few guests early in the morning and staff extremely eager to help with anything at all. Food and beverages sampled were excellent. No baths, alas - but there are "rain showers" ( for those who care about such things). All very spacious, elegant and stylish.

My onward flight was from Gate 68, which gave me an excuse to take the train for a visit to the Pier also....

    CX Pier First:
A few more guests here - but it was around 08.00am by that time. Those of you who have been using this lounge would find it fairly well unchanged, although it seemed to me to have had some of the furniture upgraded since my last visit. No time to sample the food but the dining layout was unchanged and, here again, the welcome was warm and service highly professional.

Will be passing through HKG again next week, so if there are any follow up questions, just ask.
    Pj

I found the Wing (particularly F) to be very tired and dated when I was there in 2010.

    I preferred the pier.

I may have to make an excuse to go to HKG to visit

It certainly is - I have flown from HKG 31 times in the past five years - which is almost as much as I have flown from MEL.
I have my iPad... it is ... precious to me...

I am so impressed with the way you guys come up with these statistics. I can barely remember where I flew last week! Do you actually keep a log?

I used to keep a detailed log but lost the USB it was on. I found some old data the other week, found I had downloaded QF data in 2010 and 2011, rebuilt 2009 from my diary and filled a gap in 2008 from trip reports.

    You can access:

CX - Pier (J section) gate 64, Cabin (gate 23ish?), gate 16 (old KA lounge)
    BA/QFF - J lounge - departures level around gate 16
JL - turn left instead of right at the junction for the 60-70 gates and go upstairs for an underwhelming experience

I log every flight on Flight Memory. There are others too like flight diary and openflights. Basically every flight of mine since 2006 has full details including seat number and aircraft rego.
